Cougar sighted near Livingston Mountain | The Columbian

In the early morning hours of Thursday, March 19, a neighbor's 80-pound dog was killed.

At the time, we weren't sure if it was bear or cougar, she said. Every spring, Nichols says she sees a bear in the wooded area near her house, but that she hasn't had a bad experience with it.

The next day, however, Nichols said her husband walked the nearby trail and found paw prints. They sent a photo of the print to a friend who hunts cougar for sport, who said the cat could weigh as much as 100 pounds.

Sightings were about 1 mile away. We have an outside dog, no livestock. Neighbors have horses. Several years ago a horse was clawed by a cougar.

We have a newly separated cougar here at work. The 20 something aged guys get a lot of attention from her.

We have cougars in our neck of the woods. Large male killed several elk a couple years ago. Was told by WDFW that a male cougar will cover a 75 mile radius. One of the few predators that will bury their kill and return later to eat. Saw one a few years back out in the woods.....big cats!

Douglas County is loaded with them. The neighbor next door shot one of a pair six years ago and had it mounted. Less than a quarter mile up the logging road. Bear and cougar are spotted in southern Oregon quite often. After all we did move into their area. Fortunately there is a large population of deer and turkeys to feed them.
Coyotes are more likely to take pets in Eastern Oregon.

We had cougar scat in several places on our property 15 months ago. Been working on clearing out the undergrowth below our trees to change the habitat for the cougar and it's prey. Cougars are supposedly ambush critters, rather than pursuers, so removing trees or large limbs or underbrush where they can lie in wait makes the habitat less useful to them. Once I started running chainsaws in the woods, we stopped seeing fresh scat, but it will be back.

This guy passed through my place a while back completely unnoticed except for the game camera. Eighty yards from the front door.
