Now that I read my post, the tower was not 1500 feet South of Montgomery, it was 25 miles South and was 1500 feet tall. Ha ha!

Well, at least you could use a parachute from that height. Just stay on the downwind side of the tower.

If that was the only job I could get, I'd starve to death!

Anything higher than my head is too high for me, and I'm only 5'-10"!

I worked with a friend installing wind mills for about six months. This was back in the early tax credit days of the late seventies/early eighties so these monster towers you see today were barely on the draft board. I think the highest was 140 feet. We had some free standing and some guyed.

You may think that your in good shape but the first couple of weeks of climbing will tear you up. The heighth never bothered me. You put alot of faith into that crane operator when your landing a tower section or the generator.

We had a tower on a bridge. A dropped tool went into the drink. We also had to climb that tower at night to check something. Unreal how many spiders live on a steel bridge then come out at night to catch food in the air currents.

Wind chill means something when you climb a tower in the winter.

My wife got me on one of those glass elevators in Vegas, which I instantly regretted. Almost became incontinent...anything higher than my 4X4 truck is too high.

I hear ya!! I hate those elevators. Went to Vegas a couple of years ago and went up on the "Eiffel Tower". Was OK if I was just looking out, but looking down I was white-knuckling on the railing.

Several years ago I rode a ferris wheel with an old girlfriend. We were "stuck" at the top (maybe 30-40 feet?) while they were loading/unloading. She noticed my death grip on the post and we both started laughing.

The funny thing is that I'm a private pilot. Being in a small plane (or a large plane) doesn't bother me at all. I used to fly Piper Cubs with the door open at 1000' AGL and loved it!! Somewhere I read that a high percentage of airline pilots are afraid of heights.

Worked at nuke plant construction back in 70's. We needed to do a test pick with a 50ton 300' tall tower crane, wouldn't do it. Talked to manufacturer and they told us to turn field current up on 300HP DC winch motor. Stop broke on electronic board and motor went to 0 current, which meant motor let go of test load,110% of capacity, about 6"s off ground, That tower crane started swinging about 6' back and forth.wired rope spooling off drum like crazy, ruined it. Started this test at 7AM,this at 11PM,called it a day. Still would climb. Oh and was on top when it let load go.

Did you help on the Callaway Plant? I've spent quite a bit of time there (IT consultant).

Yep... but back in my 'youth' in the Navy. I used to climb the masts to fix/maintain the navigational radars on various classes of ships. It's not the climb or the height but the swaying that gets to you.

A linesman belt (like Spiros said), plus a 'safety number' below to watch you was all you needed... OH, and the "RADIATE" keys in your pocket so that no one could turn the radar on (or anything else) whilst you were up there!

MOST important, that last little detail.

yep, radar can cook those old eyeballs in a hurry.
