deepNdirt, the second pic shows what could be a yard light. Maybe servicing it?

dcyrilc mentioned using a harness while doing some work at the top of the light pole and I thought I would make mention of a little known risk to anyone who uses any sort of suspension harness and that is the condition of orthostatic intolerance...otherwise known as suspension trauma. It can kill you. There's lots of information on the net about it, such as this article and this article which explains it quite well. I realize that most people already know about this, and it's probably been posted before, but a little refresher/reminder never hurt, eh? :)

There are also straps made for extension ladders to attach the top of the ladder to the pole so that it cannot slip to the side. My ladder is too short to reach the 30ft mounting height of the camera which is why I put the ladder into the loader bucket. Using a proper harness and lanyard is important. I also don't carry heavy loads up or down the ladder. Using a rope to raise and lower loads while securely teathered makes it safer.

I'm asking myself? what kind of service is he having to do by need of only reaching half way up?

He is servicing the anemometer, that is the device that measures wind speed to turn the system on and off... It is positioned low enough to be somewhat easy to get to, but high enough to not be effected by ground turbulence. KennyV
I ave worked on several types of wind generators, that's not the way I choose to do it ... but it would work.

Amen! If we all waited for the proper tools and the safest, NOTHING would get done! I will admit, though, since I've gotten older, There's always tomorrow when I get the tools i need.:D:laughing:Gives me the perfect excuse to buy more stuff.

I'm not endorsing the procedure, but at least the ladder sitting in the bucket won't sink into the ground on one side and fall. BTDT

Well, what's the point of the whole setup? It still only gets him halfway up the mast.

If he had any smarts, he would just stand on the ground, lasso one of the blades with a long rope, and let it winch him right up....

Coming back down would be a cinch if he remembered to take a small tarp up with him to use as a parachute....

Outstanding!

Seriously, I have done the exact same thing on a much smaller scale. It works, it's stable and pretty darn safe. I do leave the tractor running so there is no chance of leakdown.

Id think there could still be leakdown as the valves are closed .either way i wouldnt think there would be much leakdown.

So what is the concern? That the bottom of the bucket will get scratched by the ladder feet? That the tires will get dirty, requiring another full can of Armourall tire cleaner to make them acceptable at the soccer club meeting? Or maybe that the ladder's OSHA sticker is missing or is unapproved for this much extention?

Just how do you paint the blade tips on your little 6' toy windmill spinning out there on your lawn? OMG, if men were meant to fly...

You are right it is safe, for some reason there are those that think doing anything IN the bucket of any hydraulic system is SCARY dangerous... (It's a good thing they cant see the mechanism that lifts them in an elevator, or other scary things like ... _____).

As for leaving the tractor running, makes zero difference as to leak down on the loader end... Only the 3pt will continue to self adjust with the engine running. KennyV

Maybe he only left the tractor sitting there while he went back to the barn for a bigger tractor..... Too knock the darn thing over. Then you don't need a dangerous ladder!
