On my refreshed MH plow, I have set my coulters for what is going to be about a 3 inch deep cut in front of the plows. Obviously I need to practice with the plow, but until the soil dries a bit more, does anyone have any further suggestions on the coulter adjustment? Should the coulter be accurately placed above the landside of the plow? I don't have jointers on mine, do I need some? Though I have locking limiters, should I chain the coulters to keep them from swinging too far?

Thanks for any input.

From a plow manual I have:
"The rolling coulter should only be positioned far enough to the left of the landside to allow a clean, straight furrow wall. For average conditions, set the coulter blade between 1/2" and 5/8" to the left of the landside. Loose ground and tough scouring conditions will sometimes require the coulter to be set a little wider."

Thanks, that sounds like I may be close to what your manual suggests as far as the landside to coulter distance. I am in sand with a heavy overburden residual that runs to a very fine, hard, gray clay in some sections. (Actually, I have a spot the kids like because it's like the top ground layer floats in the rainy seasons - a bit like quicksand...)

Again, I'll need to experiment more - All I've been able to play in is on the edge of my driveway where the sand, turf and gravel are mixed and dry. The main plot is still draining of the regular rain we're getting.:(
