Nope. I've eaten a hundred dozen raw oysters but never one litter box brownie! Don't even have a dog! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Oysters do have a taste but only if the water they are harvested from is salty. A few years ago we had a really rainy summer here and the oysters came from "sweet" water and were absolutely tasteless. Oh, and you gotta chew 'em, too! Otherwise, why bother?

As far as mountain oysters go... never had 'em, don't plan on trying them any time soon!

The vast majority of people I speak to about this subject say the same thing. Swallow it whole, and then chase it with a cracker loaded with....cocktail sauce? Now, it may just be me, but if I'm going to pay to go out to eat, I want to exercise my teeth along with my bank roll. Give me a nice thick juicy staek....oh crud. Now I'm hungry. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh, yeah, the beer. I don't do beer. I know it's suposed to be good and all, but to me it tastes like pond scum. I never could acquire a taste for it. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Chris, I've eaten my share of raw oysters, and with just about every kind of "sauce" imaginable; Italian, seafood, barbecue, etc. and it just seems a waste of oysters to eat them raw. They're much better fried or in oyster stew, although if you take them right out of the salt water and eat them on the spot, not bad. Many years ago, my wife and I went to one of Dallas' finer restaurants on our anniversary and I talked her into trying a raw oyster. She sat there with it in her mouth, heaving, gagging, and making terrible faces. I thought for sure she was going to embarrass us in that place, but she finally swallowed it. And since then she won't touch an oyster; raw or cooked. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

You ought to try them sometime; probably nothing like you'd expect. If you've never been to The Big Texan in Amarillo, check out their web site. Click on "Let's Eat" and then on the "Dinner Menu" and look at the appetizers. I like the way they list Mountain Oysters on their menu. I was in Amarillo for a month on a little job a few years ago and one of our daughters and our grandson (at that time 6 years old) came up to visit one weekend and we took them there for dinner one night. Since they didn't know what mountain oysters were, I ordered them and they found they both liked them without knowing what they were. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif And even my wife liked them. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

But if you don't chew it how will you know if it has a pearl in it or not? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I have cracked my teeth (sounded and felt like it anyway) on no less than six pearls over the years while eating oysters. They were all smaller than a bb and only one or two were nice and round. They were not worth anything but kind of a nice bonus to go along with those tasty, chewy treats. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bird,

If you like oysters, next time you are around the coastal area see if you can find a seafood place that sells oysters still in the shell. The ones I have bought came in a burlap bag. Take them home (or where ever you are staying) and put them on the bbq pit. Only "cook" them until the shells start to pop open. Take them off the pit and eat them while they are hot with your favorite sauce. Um, um!

Okay. You got me on this one. To be honest I will try anything once. That's how I learned to like oysters. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Escargot, too! Let me rephrase that statement... I have never tried mountain oysters but might try them if the opportunity arises. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

OK, I think I'm gettin the idea here; First you get half wasted, so it seems like a good idea to eat something that lives on the bottom of the ocean and draws nutrients from fishshut. Then, you swallow a few whole, and chase em with crackers loaded with hot sauce, so you need more beer. Then, since yer totally wasted, you decide to chew on something that would make a fine core for a golfball, and hope you can tell the difference between the chunk of tooth you just busted and the pearl. Then, probably more beer.
And this little exercize in gastronomic excellence costs you a ton of money, not including the cost of the DWI on the way back from the oysterfest.
So, listen, if and when the snow melts this year, how many of ya want to swing by and eat slugs off the front lawn? I'll even set up half a barrel of beer, and a video camera.

Chris, my parents used to live in Port Aransas, so I've helped Dad harvest a few oysters, then in later years he bought them "by the bushel" in the burlap bags, so I've helped shuck a few, but I never tried cooking them the way you suggested. I especially like smoked oysters and oysters in my Cajun Stew.

Now that's one I've never tried nor had any desire to try, although an old friend tells me they're very good. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
