I like classic country (and classic rock & roll), made my own CD's for years with only what I like before MP3 players came along.

Anyone else listen to 95.3 "The Range"?

The range is good, I also like am 1190, its a news channel that plays classic country at night. I can't stand most of the new country, it needs a steel guitar and fiddle. In the 70's you could tell the difference between rock and country.

I surprised my wife with tickets to see Alison Krauss and her band Union Station in Baltimore this past weekend. while I am not a very big fan of country music ( although they are more bluegrass than country) I was pleasantly surprised and entertained. She is an outstanding musician and so is Union Station.

I did find it odd that the music I can hear at any state fair in my neck of the woods, was being played, and played very well, at the Myerhoff Symphony Hall and attended by mostly snotty, $100 a bottle wine drinking snobs. I never felt more out of place and the music also seemed very out of place also.

In earlier days, Country Music songs related to the working man, hardships, love that was gained or lost, ballads, struggles, love of one's Country, Family life; etc. In general, subjects and occurrences that the average hard working Man or Woman could associate and relate to.

For some reason, this reminded me of this song:

Remember when Ronnie Milsap was killing country music because he was too "pop" in his sound?

There are still artists doing "traditional" country but they dont get radio play. Typically country radio is a top 40 format so they play the trendy stuff. Its like saying "rock music is dead" because Nickleback is an awful and popular band. The real music is a little further down the path. Now the more traditional sound is called "outlaw country". That is where you find Hank Williams III (Remember when Hank II was criticized for not sounding like his daddy?) and Shooter Jennings.

Somebody said something about the crazy outfits- can it any worse than anything Glen Campbell wore in the 70s? :)

Cm'on now, Glen did some pretty good stuff despite those Rhinestone Cowboy outfits. By the Time I Get to Phoenix, Wichita Lineman, Gentle on my Mind, and Galveston spring to mind. Of course, that was kind of country-pop. I still prefer the old reliables like George Jones and Conway Twitty.

A decade or so ago there was a traditional country singer/guitarist by the name of Roger Wallace who I thought was very good at playing the old country sound. Unfortunately, he and many other artists like him get totally ignored by the so called "country music" radio stations. I think the only "popular" country singer I ever really liked was Dwight Yoakam.

Haha! You guys are showing your age! I can guarantee this same issue has been going on since the beginning of time! Growing up, I listened to rock and roll (aka devil music). Kids today listen to rap (aka thug music). My grandparents (born in the late 1800's) didn't like the music my parents listened to (I remember grandpa saying - they just keep repeating the same words over and over).

Go back 6000 years. I can hear it now -"when I was young, we pounded rocks together and chanted - now that was music. Today all the kids want to do is bang sticks on hollow logs and clap. That ain't music"

Fortunately for me - I appreciate most all music styles. I do quite a bit of driving and I have been known to put the radio on scan for ten minutes till I find a song that suites me at that time. Might end up listening to gospel, classical, jazz, classic rock, old country, new country, or something current. Used to think Eminem was terrible - but he does have a few songs that I kinda enjoy the artistry in his music.

Now the music my kid listens to - arrgghhhh. :) :)

Haha- showing my age!!
