I had my backhoe out for the first time this evening, and it was a pretty shaky first attempt.

First, I when I plunged the bucket into the soil, many times I'd skid the tractor backwards on the outrigger shoes. What am I doing wrong? Too much of a load?

Secondly, it's real easy to whip the dipper (?) left or right or up and down. The controls seem too sensitive. Is there a way to slow down the reaction of the controls or am I being too heavy handed.

I did manage to dig a large stump out and move a few large rocks from the hole and onto a wall I'm building. Just hope I can master it.

If you are trying to break the surface of hard soil, you need to go a little easy with the teeth at first. Loosen the crust, then you can go for bigger bites of earth.

You'll have more power with the bucket closer to the tractor then fully extended, just based on leverage alone. Practice makes perfect, but yes if you try to take to much the tractor will move instead.

The boom is sensitive and will react as you have mentioned...you just need a softer touch. I had the same issues when I first started using the backhoe myself. Before long you will master it, it's not that hard.

I don't know if the sensitivity can be adjusted, I think it may have to do with what gets fed first on the hydraulics side.

Yes, you may need to take smaller bites when you take your 1st bite or when digging in hard pan. After awhile you'll figure out when to take a full bite and when not too.

No this is normal. Other than practice, practice and more practice, lowering the rpm is the only way to slow it down. After awhile you'll learn more about "feathering" the controls to get that smooth operation the pro's have.

Keep in mind that the BX TLB is very lite and being such it is easy to throw it about w/the BH.
With practice it'll get much easier and you'll get much better.

The backhoe movements on the BX are quite sensitive to variations in engine rpm. If you drop the rpm some the motions will become slower, and if you drop them enough you will be pretty much limited to one motion at a time. Lower engine speeds will make it easier to become used to the movements. The boom swing always seems to be much faster than the other motions, and that took the most time for me to get used to. Try variations of just sinking the teeth in the soil, and using the bucket curl, sinking the teeth, and moving the hoe towards the tractor at lower rpm, and you will get used to the most efficient way of digging in your situation. You will also find out which movements move the tractor around the most........

Best thing you can do is just go digging!!!!!!

I felt the same way when I got my bx two years ago. Now I say, can't this thing go faster! You'll get the hang of it. Great little hoe

You will do fine. Practice makes perfect.

It will really dig when you get the hang of combined motions and stick motions in 'x' patterns. Pick somewhere you don't care about and just dig. First day I got mine, I just went out and dug a hole to see what it would do...I had run big units long ago but not for some time, but it all works the same.

It is kind of like difference betwen flying a fixed wing plane and a helicopter. Very light touch on sticks will do great. Heavy stick will cause irratic movement. 2400-2500rpm seems just about right.

Although I have a 23
The weight of the machine is the issue when pulling back.
I have found when i have to make a cut that way move bucket parralle to ground and only skim 1-2 inches off.

The best way for trenches and holes seems to be cut hole in as above then work off the face tward you pulling up

im sure alot of you will disagree with me but one thing i always did with my bx was get all 4 tires off the ground. Use the front loader to raise the front end up and the outriggers to raise the rear up and start digging. I still do that sometimes with the b3030 when the ground is hard or im really trying to pull on something. i tried the park brake method and its just not strong enough to do what i needed.
the toothbar on the front would really make that thing plant in the ground.
my first project was 400 + foot of seprtic line so by the end of day one i was comfortable. i started out running mine at about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle then would work it up as i felt things were going to slow.
