Thanks for the compliments, men. I have been thinking how to do this for the last 10 years.

10 or so loads of clay rolled in on Thursday. Neighbor can get me unscreened topsoil for a pretty good price so it sounds as though 6 triaxle loads of that will show up. Then the Kubota gets to do a little work!

Did you come up with an idea, or what you're going to use to allow the water to move on the left side of your driveway if you want to cover that in?

Reason I'm asking is I want to do the same thing to the ditch that runs the length of my driveway and don't want to spend large money on a culvert to bury.

I would shy away from paving that area. It will cost a lot, may not produce the results you hope for and then it's just going to become an ongoing headache.
Wait a year or two, patch the stone as needed, and roll it out as necessary. It looks better as stone, it's more natural and blends well with your existing landscaping. Plus you can always bring in more stone top dressing and work it with the 'Bota.
And your concerns about compaction and results of the end asphalt product are all valid. Stay with how it is now, JMHO!

Looks good as is to me. Lot easier to fix/reshape a compacted gravel drive than a paved one

I pulled the trigger and I am really happy we did. Kids having been riding bikes, scooters and playing basketball on it all month. Although the cold can hold off as long as it wants to, really excited about no ice on the driveway in the winter.IMG_6390.JPG

Thickness of the blacktop is 4 to 5". As an added bonus, the township had the same company that paved my driveway do a mile long section of our road. Tied my driveway into it so nicely; can't even feel the transition when you pull out. Had some more slate and clay delivered last week to fill in next to the right edge.

I've been putting in so many hours at work, there hasn't been enough energy left over at the end of the day to handle getting this stuff finished. And when there has been energy, I have been spending time hiking and playing golf with my two sons. Hard to strike a balance between it all but hoping to finish this project up by fall. Sure would be nice to be cutting grass in the spring.

Sure hope that you DO NOT have a clay base under that 4"-5" driveway.

Well, if you start at the beginning, you'd know he has crushed slate under the driveway.

CincyFlyer is right on. The driveway underneath is over 40 years old with load after load of gravel laid in over the years. I then had lifts of slate rolled in, additional gravel brought in and then the paving guys laid another 2 to 3" prior to paving. I didn't cut any corners on this one. And I don't expect to have any triaxle's on it again....ever if I can avoid it.

Time will tell, but I am pretty confident it will last. And if it doesn't, it will get fixed when a top coat goes on in a few years.
