Coyote too close for comfort

It's so funny folks actually think that was the way it was back then in the west etc...in reality more people died of tooth infections and disease than bullet wounds and hangings...and the naivety doesn't stop there...people actually think that shows like sopranos was a real depiction...

I'm sure that has always been true everywhere.

Still, a lot of people met untimely deaths. Read about Pioche, Nevada when you have some time. Supposedly 70 people died in gunfights before the first "natural" death. I spend a lot of time wandering the Nevada outback and like to check out the headstones that are still readable. Some of them even tell how many bullets it took to kill the person!

We have coyotes, bobcat, bear, fox in the woods around our property. Have dogs, cats, chickens and ducks. Electric fencing works wonders. Have not had a single loss in 5+ years once the fence was up. Coyotes are opportunistic so I make sure my pets and livestock are not easy picking so they go after the rabbits, squirrels and mice.

Interesting discussion, beats the heck out of watching the "boob tube". I agree the pics are nice to see. A few years back my wife went out the back gate with the dogs for a walk. They hadn't walked more than twenty feet and saw a coyote watching them. She turned around and came back inside the fenced yard. Really shook her up! The coyotes do chase the penned ducks, geese, and turkeys of my neighbors. I haven't seen any for a while, but none of the irrigation ditches have any water in them so they must have gone elsewhere, at least for now. In New Mexico, coyotes are legal targets since they are prey animals. Some people in the city complain about people shooting them, but the critters do cause issues for people. Especially for those who have recently moved into the county where the coyotes, fox, and other animals live. Enjoyable post, thanks for a very lively discussion.

Interesting conversation here. I have never drank alcohol and appreciate those who realize the danger of fire arms mixed with 'anything' that affects your ability.

I did live in the country and it moved out as more and more land has houses and not crops. Only once have ever seen a coyote and non there are houses there, yet know we have them all around. Odd the day this began my grandson told me about a neighbor who was having them near their horses and it concerns them.

I grew up on small farm, we raised cows, hogs and goats. Nothing large but a very varied operation. Had many dogs and cats growing up. No coyotes here then. I grew up not afraid of walking the woods with nothing other than pocket knife and back then not a series weapon at all. Never felt threatened. As I got older learned I was not invincible and not animals are friends. Not all are enemies. I have learned to pay attention to every animal. Maybe having children and grandchildren I realize just how fragile life is.

Lee Marvin looked so old. Yet he was only 63 when he passed away in 87.

To use a quote my Dad said in regards to things like this. Lee Marvin was rode hard and put away wet. :D

I see various wildlife every day on our farm. Coyotes are the rarest to see. They only give our farmstead a wide berth because of our two dogs. Foxes play with the dogs. Bobcats on the other hand aren't the least bit afraid of our dogs. The dogs have a great respect for the Bobcats.

I've taken thousands of pics of wildlife here. Having a good Cell Phone in my pocket has helped a lot. Opportunities are almost daily.

Yes it was odd. I mean we know the coyotes are around. We hear them. See paw prints and scat from time to time. Just VERY odd to see one just standing my yard like it owned the place. Kind of wish I had my cell phone on me and would have been quick enough to snap a picture.

We have not seen him/her since. However there is a rabbit living in the bushes near the house. So I guess if we find the rabbit gone we know the coyote was back.

We are blessed to live out here and see so much wild life daily. Last night as the sun was setting there was a deer grazing in the woods about 100 feet out the kitchen window. She had not a care in the world it seemed. Just eating away on whatever was growing there.

Makes me think I need to plant some food plots out in our meadow for them to eat. Neighbors have a pond and I am sure that is the attraction for a lot of the wildlife.... open water unless it is a VERY cold winter.

Had one come thru my yard carrying one of the neighbors chickens day before yesterday. Our 2 German shepherds gave chase but the "yote" easily outran them and never dropped the chicken. This was about 0930. Not usual to see them during the day around here. Our chickens were still in the pen at the time.
That does make my nervous about them being out in the day now, but so far since we have been penning them before sundown and letting them out usually before 0900, we haven't lost any.

You ever walk the paved bike path at Potato Creek? There's coyote poop EVERYWHERE! Full of rabbit fur.
