I took this picture this afternoon. That 4x4 post is about six ft tall and about 325 ft from our kitchen window (where I took the picture from). Can someone confirm if this is a coyote? Does it look like she's been nursing?

We are in Northern Virginia and our neighbors lost some animals to coyotes two weeks ago. Yes, they are here and they are here to stay.

What kind of animals did they lose?

We have them here, they make quite a racket when the pack howls at night. We've had a couple of small dogs disappear over the years that we suspect the coyotes got. But they don't bother the horses. This winter I saw a pair within 50 feet of the horses and the horses paid them no attention.

Lost animals sometimes get blamed on coyotes. Usually not much direct evidence, just suspicion. They are a very clever animal, and will pick on fawns. But not much bigger than that. This female will be on the lookout for food to drag back to her den.

OTOH, a momma deer will probably chase an individual coyote to protect her baby.

A couple of years ago, our german shepherd dog came running down the trail full speed like the devil was after him. A couple of seconds later, here comes momma deer in full pursuit! A short distance further, we found a newborn fawn.

You are right about suspicion. When our little beagle disappeared, we were hearing the coyote pack howling at night.

The biggger dogs the coyotes run from. I've had the dogs (german shepard and coonhound) flush a coyote out of the woods in front of me when I was riding the horse.

Speaking of that pair of dogs, the german shepherd catches and kills coons, the coonhound would catch rabbits. Just a confused pair of dogs!
