Coyotes went after my neighbors Lab yesterday, How do I kill, I live in the suburbs

Two coyotes tried to get my neighbors lab, I would like to kill the killers but live in the suburbs on 6 acres. Police say I can shoot if the animal is actually trying to take a pet but cannot hunt them. Any ideas how I can get these coyotes without endangering pets and without making any noise? Will a cci cb 22 lr round at 710 fps work? This round makes no more noise than a pellet gun.

The old saying, I would rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6 comes to mind...
If they will attack a full grown Lab, what about small kids, and others? I realize the Coyotes have to eat, but why can't they stand in line at the foodstamps office like everyone else?
If they come on my property, and I see the tracks or evidence of foul play, telling the local sheriff is the last thing I am going to do. Discharging a firearm inside our broad city limits is a no-no, but protecting oneself overrides that.

One thing to make sure of prior to doing ANY SHOOTING is to make sure of surroundings.
What is behind where you are shooting, (homes barns open field or roads? etc) a 22lr will easily go 1/4 to1/2 mile & still have enough velocity to do major damage to people/property.

What is the chance you will hit your target? (good, medium or poor shot?) Remember these targets
WONT be setting still, more than likely on the move/chasing food.

The 22LR WILL take down a coyote well enough but more than likely will need a kill shot up close. Be prepared for at least 2 shots on one critter as mentioned they usually wont stand still for an easy kill shot in a neighborhood.

Also be prepared for one or more neighbors to NOT like you shooting at those innocent coyotes & to call cops/game wardens. Especially when they see you walk up and finish the thing off and drag it's carcass off.

Then you also have to deal with the 2nd "S" issue where to get rid of your target after it was taken>? Bury it in the back yard, wrap it up and take it to the local land fill or toss in someones trash can when they are away?

and after all that remember the 3 "S"s (Shoot Shovel & Shut up.)

That's a curious distinction. I would presume that a coyote isn't coming by to borrow a cup of sugar or bum a ride. Their very existence is based on predation. Kill 'em with extreme prejudice. Get one of these (suppressor goes in the shroud at the end of the barrel).

The .22 CB Cap is what I think your asking about? IF so, NO it will not take down a coyote. It will enter then skin if close enough but thats about it.

In my opinion the likelihood of a clean kill with the CB round is not high. Head shot yes. Remember guys this is not even a standard velocity .22 long rifle round he is talking about here, it is a very low velocity low bullet weight CB round. It just happens to be in a long rifle length to facilitate feeding in many rifles. I am wondering if a havaheart trap might be your best bet here. As others have said you chances of getting caught are good. You are in an incorporated area, and the law is not really on your side. A 12 gauge turkey gun with full or extra full choke and a load of No. 4's or No 2's would be good to about 50 yards, and pretty safe. but a loud boom. A suppressed .300 whisper comes to mind. But I know you don't have one. I guess you could claim the coyote was trying to kill the dog if you have the stones to stick to your story, and it would even be true if they come back, they are likely to be looking for pets. We lost our outside kitty to coyotes a few years ago. He was big and tough, but not tough enough for coyotes. One of the most effective adjuncts to calling coyotes in is to use a stuffed toy dog as a decoy. But as you can see here, there will be someone that will turn you in for firing any gun in town, even if they know why you did it..

In Cape Breton Nova Scotia the coyotes killed a lady who was jogging . Another time a school bus driver had to hurry up and get the 7 year old in the bus because there were 3 coyotes stocking. One Coyote allow is no harm to humans. They say they are mating with the wolves and they are now traveling in packs. Big, more agressive, and the security in numbers. Not really a great thing

If your in the "suburbs", then I'd contact animal control and in the mean time do what you have to do. If they aren't your dogs and you do shoot a coyote, you may have some "splainin" to do to your local Law or Game folks. Can you use a firearm to protect your neighbors pets there? Just curious. Here, in Texas, most cities and town have ordinances about shooting in the city limits, In the county your OK.

I think it depends on where one lives. We have some friends that live in an area that has a lot of development going on in their area. This is crowding and concentrating the coyotes around their houses and the coyotes are now snatching small dogs out of folks yards on a regular basis. They hate coyotes there. We live in a more rural area and do have coyotes around here but they are not as concentrated and not as much of a problem here.

If your state allows trapping, see if your Fish & Game department has a list of trappers. Our state allows hunting and trapping of coyotes and in areas where hunting won't work due to the close proximity of other houses (you need to be at least 500 feet from any dwellings to hunt), they recommend trappers.

About 5 years ago around midnight had a full blown dog fight on front porch and deck . Looking out window saw three coyotes had cornered our small German police type dog. And attacking when it turned to fight off one the others joined in. unlocked door and stepped out in my BVD's Yelling and the coyotes left the area. Wife was laughing so hard . she had a time describing what I looked like no wonder they ran.
We live in the country and hear the coyotes all the time have not had any more trouble.
Did have a femail coyote that had three young dog looking off spring. that would hide behind a tall clump of grass and bark at us . mother coyote would just leave they followed .
I also see coyotes watching me when working in the fields .Don't consider them dangerous.
Clean up dead deer from high way accidents . animals that die in the normal course of living.

We have had problems with moose, grizzly (brown) bears and coyotes around the farm. Had a pair of coyotes that would "bait and switch" local dogs into chase and then bushwacking. Nonetheless, if you've got concerns about neighbors or close-by structures and regulations you might consider 12 gauge cracker shells or rubber bullets.

We can get them for free from our local Fish and Game office or the Troopers here in Alaska. Depending upon the critter (and the range) these methods are to scare the animals from your property. Most times, they won't come back for quite a spell - if at all - when they get the experience!

However, folk's have killed moose and bears, etc. with BOTH methods if they're too close when you shoot at them! Especially the rubber bullets at distances of 30 yards or less. So, if you get close enough to a coyote and hit him with either at that range - he's most likely gonna be a dead coyote!

The real benefit to either the rubber bullet or cracker shell is that at 50 yards or more the danger is non-lethal or minimal to other people, livestock or structures.

The newer crossbows these days are deadly accurate and silent.

This is not a DIY job. Best to call the appropriate authorities for help. Coyotes are very smart. If you went hunting for them you'd be lucky to even see them much less get close enough for a shot.

My wife and I are happy to have coyotes in our neighborhood. They keep the deer and woodchucks out of our gardens and orchard. We always give hunters permision to hunt our land for deer, but tell them coyotes are off limits.
