95XL883,
The near death of a neighbor is what Timster2 linked to. Read the thread from beginning to end to see what happens when things go horribly wrong, yet because of Timster's quick and valiant efforts death did NOT result.
Yes, dogs died; but the alternative is two people nearly died, one got seriously life threateningly mauled and still lives with the consequences of irresponsible dog owner's lack of attention to detail.

Regardless of having to live next to your neighbors, and their considering their vicious dog to be like their child, what happens if someone on your property does get attacked by this dog? Then what? You have to have everyone within 10' of you at all times?! That's patently ridiculous and having everyone carrying in case of a random attack, wow! You're not factoring in that the dog is a HUNTER too and it could surprise you, your wife or someone else on your property at any time. What about the UPS man? A Jehovah's witness, a survey taker, a lost tourist?

You are not only at risk, that dog has your number and WILL come back to get you. It IS survival in the jungle: kill or be killed. The dog could care less, so YOU MUST care more. Forget the neighbors, if they care so much about their 'child' then keep it away from you. Their message to you is lip service; their actions speak to their not giving one dog s*i^ about YOU OR the da"m dog.

Be smart, while you have the chance to be preemptive.

You have bad neighbors who have dogs. Most of their dogs will not be trained or controlled and therefor will become problem dogs. There are some bad dogs that can't be controlled, but mostly there are bad owners who don't control their dogs. You did the right thing with the shot from the 9mm, and maybe that is the training the dog needs. I don't know that I would count on that though.

I truly hope this situation is solved without anyone being hurt, but I would guess that the worst is yet to come.

Thanks for the support. I'm guessing you are right. Saturday's optimism of backing the dog down once is ebbing. The dog had better flee at the sight of a human on my property or I will put it down.

CM,

Thanks for the advice. Please be assured that if the dog doesn't flee from a human on my property that I will put it down immediately. I'm not sure the dog has my number but I recognize that it is vicious. There are no more second chances, warnings, whatever for the dog. It flees or it dies. The dog's viciousness makes that necessary. I protect me and mine. On my property, I will make sure they have the tools necessary to protect themselves in addition to my protection. While the dog is a hunter, it is not a stalk and pounce hunter. It's a bark, run and stir something up to chase hunter. It is easy to see coming, even in the woods from at least a 100 yards. I won't wait till it sees me to draw. I'll clear leather and set to fire the second I see it. That may sound harsh to some, but it is too fast to let it close before clearing leather. You are right about the neighbor too. When it comes to his dogs, he doesn't care about anybody. He just lets the dog run.

Okay, I've got to vent a little. One thing I haven't mentioned that does "jack my jaw" is that he has a large fenced in area that would easily contain all of his dogs. He never uses it. Geez, ticks me off. An animal like that and I or one of the other landowners is going to have to deal with it. None of us want to do it, but one of us will. Given the chance, I won't hesitate. This has gone on too long. Rant off.

Thanks again for the support.

Thanks Tom. Saturday wasn't my chance. I would have to have let the dog get too close to me and its owner would still be begging me not to shoot it. It would have stayed in the road until it was 5' away. I'd like to think the dog will stay scared of me but I suspect it won't. If it doesn't flee my property, it will be put down. Any thing less than fleeing, I will consider aggression by the dog.

+1 That's all I'm able to think after reading this thread.

Hoping to hear a safe outcome for the OP. I wouldn't be concerned for the dog owners as they obviously have zero regard for the safety of their neighbors and their own pets. In any event, I side with many others here that a human life is more valued than a dog.

Continue calling the police out to their house until the dog attacks the cop and he shoots it.

Recently had a similar situation at my place. Repeated requests to the neighbor were ignored. Finally called the county dog catcher, who first warned, then ticketed, the neighbor. At that point they put up a fence (though it's one of those portable electric fences) and the chasing and lunging stopped. But the dog's still there behind the fence, still barking with hackles up. Like you, I can't do anything unless it attacks me or my livestock (which I don't have). But given the next chance to SSS, I will. And I'll feel bad for the dog, but the real problem is the owners. They know or respect no limits unless they're forced to back down through confrontation. Heck of a way to live, but it's either that or move, which I'm not going to do.

That said, if the county hadn't intervened, my next step was to have my attorney write a firmly worded letter threatening a law suit. And if that didn't work they'd be in court. That usually makes enough of an impression to get people to change their ways. It also puts law enforcement on notice that there's a problem, so that next time they know who to blame. That's hard on neighbor relations, but being laid up from a dog bite is a lot harder.

Good luck with your situation, but unfortunately the only way I see it ending is by putting down the dog.

I have dog problems all the time, I live in a urban part of the county with the only 15 acres in th area that is zoned for ag and completely fenced with field fence and electric on the inside of the field fence (goats like to climb), so, I have goats, chickens, horse or two and have lost a few goats and chickens to neighborhood dogs. Laws are not enforced by the country dogcatcher so I called Sheriff several times but unless they witness the attack, they say they can do nothing. I asked about video and still say that will not be able to use it. The deputy chief visited the last time and told me if I ever feel in danger of my life to take whatever action I needed to stop the threat on my property, then dig a hole and bury the threat. But, I like dogs and none have been aggressive to me to date, so I purchased 2 guardian dogs instead. Here is where the fun really starts, neighbors lab digs under the fence and the they call me to tell me my dogs are attacking their dog, by the time I get to the field, the dog was dead about 100 feet inside the fence. Long story made short, they sued and won, my farm insurance paid out without going to court, told me it is cheaper to pay these type of claims than fight them and I almost lost my dogs due a vicious dog law that applies to my dogs but not the neighbors in this case. To me this is reflection of the sorry state of the society we live in. No responsibility or accountability nowadays it seems.
