Whether I like them or not. Today the federal government will overflying my property and surrounding areas - shooting them. My neighbor - a large rancher - came over to tell me this yesterday. He will be paying $1500/hour for this service. This winter he has already lost to young cattle to the coyotes. He also came over to ask if I would allow them to be shot on my property. I have no range animals but I do have mixed feelings. I told him it was OK. Cattle are his livelihood and I can completely understand his position

How do you get that job?! I mean, I certainly don't ever want to be a Fed, but this sounds extremely fun!

I participate in a coyote hunting competition every year, typically in February. The area we all cover is south of I-90 from the WA/ID border to 395 down to the snake. I've been through Amber/ Williams Lake more than a few times during these hunts. Mostly my team and I stay around St John. Its a sponsored event with some good prize money for most coyotes. It lasts 24hrs, from 6pm to 6pm. Proof is dead coyotes. My team and I have only won it once. We were the only team that brought in a dead coyote that I shot at about 150yds.

Most of the farmers and ranchers we stop and talk with are extremely supportive. I have nothing personal against coyotes, except for the killing of my chickens and a cat or two throughout the years, but I do see them as a nuisance, who have no real predators to keep them in check... minus those of us who hunt them.

I have been around cattle since I was born and to this day I've never seen a confirmed coyote attack on a calf. I have seen still born calves eat by coyotes and someone blamed them for killing it. I have been involved with setting up ambush for coyotes attacking cattle that turned out to be dogs. There was once a blowhard in my area that claimed to have witnessed numerous cows injured, hogs and calves killed by coyotes. Me and another guy called him out one day wagering $1k even bet a coyote confined with a cow and her calf or sow with a pig would go hungery for 4 days and the animals wouldn't be scratched. He declined and that was the last we heard of tall tales about killer coyotes. It's the rancher's money (or is it,you mentioned Federal Government) but imo the airplane and gunfire will run more weight off the herd of cattle than you can buy baby calves for. Not only that, the cows will be off their feed after such a calamity.
In open areas of Texas where 4 wheel drive can get around hunters put a couple of scent hounds down to jump coyotes, intercept the chase and release greyhound hybrids that quickly overtake the yote and string it out. Arguably inhuman when witnessed but popular sport none the less.
I suggest anyone with a stake in coyote control contact the sheep research station in Idaho and ask them to send information.

I go to GREAT pains to ensure my little Cocker Spaniel ( Brownie ) and the coyotes never "mix it up". My neighbor does not have that option.

This will NOT be one of my better days.
Flag them, and send them to my place for wild hogs !

$1500 AN HOUR? Wow! How many hours will they spend? Geez, you'd think he could find a/some trappers or hunters to take 'em out, for free.

I wonder if it is really coyotes killing the calves? We had a cow/calf operation in the Columbia Basin for years. The area was thick with coyotes. You could hear them howling every night. We couldn't keep a house cat around because of the coyotes, but we never lost a calf to any predator. It was not uncommon to see Coyotes walking through the cattle herd, but they never bothered them. You mentioned earlier there were cougars in your area? They could cause a problem.

In any case, I suspect your neighbor is wasting his money for a very temporary reduction in your area's coyote population.

An interesting thing I have noticed is the coyotes look a lot different from place to place. Down at that place near the Columbia River, the coyotes were big, furry, rather handsome animals. Around here on the Palouse they are all a lot smaller and just scroungy looking. It is only 150 miles difference in location.
