I've never seen coyotes pulling calves or chewing on cows, but I have heard about it. True or not, they are a nuisance. Maybe folks from Texas have never seen aggressive coyotes because it seldom freezes there, there is plenty of food for the coyotes to risk going after a mother cow giving birth. But up north, when there is a several inches to feet of snow, the coyotes get hungry, and hunger drives aggression. This is why we do our competition in January or February. The coyote is more active out looking for food. If we see cattle, especially calves, we really slow down and look on the hillsides for those coyotes.
There is a lot of sympathy for animals of all sorts. Everyone is just trying to eek out an existence. I understand that. At one time in my life, I was the hellion that didn't care if it (whatever 'it' was) lived or died. Now, I've slowed down and try to take a different look at things, except for coyotes. I see a coyote, it dies. Everyone in my neighborhood (country neighborhood) actively shoots at coyotes when spotted, and whichever neighbor the yote runs towards gets a call, and we might hear another bang. Or, we might simply speed up and swerve to run one over:
