I've never seen coyotes pulling calves or chewing on cows, but I have heard about it. True or not, they are a nuisance. Maybe folks from Texas have never seen aggressive coyotes because it seldom freezes there, there is plenty of food for the coyotes to risk going after a mother cow giving birth. But up north, when there is a several inches to feet of snow, the coyotes get hungry, and hunger drives aggression. This is why we do our competition in January or February. The coyote is more active out looking for food. If we see cattle, especially calves, we really slow down and look on the hillsides for those coyotes.

There is a lot of sympathy for animals of all sorts. Everyone is just trying to eek out an existence. I understand that. At one time in my life, I was the hellion that didn't care if it (whatever 'it' was) lived or died. Now, I've slowed down and try to take a different look at things, except for coyotes. I see a coyote, it dies. Everyone in my neighborhood (country neighborhood) actively shoots at coyotes when spotted, and whichever neighbor the yote runs towards gets a call, and we might hear another bang. Or, we might simply speed up and swerve to run one over:

Today the federal government will overflying my property and surrounding areas - shooting them. My neighbor - a large rancher - came over to tell me this yesterday. He will be paying $1500/hour for this service.
Could you please explain this government program. Around here guys have dogs with radio collars, drive the roads, then run in quick to get their kill. Maybe there is a better way.

I absolutely don't want some guy with a high powered rifle trying to shoot coyotes from a helicopter orbiting my place.

If some private person tried to shoot from a helicopter to the ground, I'd suspect it would be some kind of federal felony with the FAA and/or federal marshals showing up to make arrests.

This mangy old guy is helping with gopher control in the orchard. He hung around for a couple of months, not very concerned that we could see him.

The funniest Coyote story here was when there was a feral Peacock hanging around. Every time there was a chorus of coyotes he would sing right along with them from his treetop in hilarious falsetto. Pure comedy in the night.

I suspect that it's managed through the APHIS program. USDA APHIS | Wildlife Damage
We pay to have problem beaver trapped and removed. It's only allowed in the summer when it doesn't interfere with trapping season.

Just an idea - We have a problem with deer that get inside the fence we put up to protect new orchard trees. (About 20 acres fenced). Would it work to invite a club of herding-dog enthusiasts to run the deer out the front gate?

Just thinking, here. I have no idea if this is practical. Comments?

Herding dogs are trained on livestock. Chasing deer is probably not in the trainer's/owners best interests?

Oddity out west; local group(s) is/are offering $15K for info leading to the prosecution of the person who killed a wolf in south central ore-gone; in other news, crime stoppers is offering $0 to find a man who killed a person in portland
...and remember, in the PNW; offering plastic straws to customers unless they ask for them is illegal, but crack pipes & syringes are still free.

Pardon me for my tangent(s); my thought was to show the inconsistencies.

Most of the ranchers around here have Great Pyrenees dogs that pretty much let the coyotes know who’s boss. I’m surprised that Animal Damage Services would do aerial gunning; typically around here they do trapping.
