rabbit in distress which 100% did not work with our midwestern coyotes. The only thing that came in to a distress call was a huge owl.

It seems like everybody uses some variation of a rabbit call, and coyotes aren't stupid. The first thing that came in when I used to call was chickadees. I don't recall ever actually seeing a predator though. Have you ever tried a crow call?

There is a Basque fellow about fifty miles south of me. He has thousands of sheep and several Great Pyrenees dogs. I guess this is his way of protecting his sheep.

Several years ago - down his way - searching for a Geocache in a blinding snow storm. Crawled under a barbed wire fence - following my hand held GPS. Walked smack dab into one of his Great Pyrenees dogs. Damn near crapped myself. Thank God - the dog was friendly and not aggressive.

This made me laugh... a good way to start out the morning.

Ya - Jstpssng. For a moment there I think the big white dog though my hand held GPS unit was a treat I was bringing to him. The dog followed right along with me as I finally located the Geocache.

It was snowing so very hard - the wife, sitting in our Jeep, never saw the dog. When I recorded that Geocache find on the web site - made a note for subsequent searchers about the big white dog. And maybe they would be well advised to bring a doggie treat.

I have a couple coming around regular at night, get them on trialcam.
But, since I picked up the black bear on cam, havent seen the coyotes.
I think I would rather have the coyotes.

Off-topic a bit, but on my honeymoon in Kauai, Hawaii, the government or some type of official agency was flying around in a helicopter shooting mountain goats off of the mountain sides.

As for the coyotes, I hear them quite often going nuts attacking something in the nearby fields. Once whatever they're attacking is dead, it's silent. Sort of puts a chill down your spine.

Every year in Luzerne, MI they have a predator round up hunt.
Hunters receive $25 per predator they bring into the Luzerne Hardware store.

I have been around cattle since I was born and to this day I've never seen a confirmed coyote attack on a calf. I have seen still born calves eat by coyotes and someone blamed them for killing it. I have been involved with setting up ambush for coyotes attacking cattle that turned out to be dogs. There was once a blowhard in my area that claimed to have witnessed numerous cows injured,hogs and calves killed by coyotes. Me and another guy called him out one day wagering $1k even bet a coyote confined with a cow and her calf or sow with a pig would go hungery for 4 days and the animals wouldn't be scratched. He declined and that was the last we heard of tall tales about killer coyotes. It's the rancher's money (or is it,you mentioned Federal Government) but imo the airplane and gunfire will run more weight off the herd of cattle than you can buy baby calves for. Not only that,the cows will be off their feed after such a calamity.
In open areas of Texas where 4 wheel drive can get around hunters put a couple of scent hounds down to jump coyotes,intercept the chase and release greyhound hybrids that quickly overtake the yote and string it out. Arguably inhuman when witnessed but popular sport none the less.
I suggest anyone with a stake in coyote control contact the sheep research station in Idaho and ask them to send information.

I've never known of a confirmed cattle attack/kill either. Sheep, often.

I did see two coyotes stalking a yearling deer last Fall, but that didn't last long.

Here hunters camo up and use an electric call. My Mailman hunts like this. He stopped by yesterday to ask if he could hunt the edge of my CRP next to timber. I said sure. He said he gets nothing with rabbit call anymore. Figures the coyotes got smart and figured out it was a trap. He now uses feral cat call. Said yesterday morning he called one out of the timber but it was still leery and stayed about 200yds from him. He finally took a shot and missed. That coyote won't come to a feral cat call again.

Whether I like them or not. Today the federal government will be overflying my property and surrounding areas - shooting them. My neighbor - a large rancher - came over to tell me this yesterday. He will be paying $1500/hour for this service. This winter he has already lost to young cattle to the coyotes. He also came over to ask if I would allow them to be shot on my property. I have no range animals but I do have mixed feelings. I told him it was OK. Cattle are his livelihood and I can completely understand his position.

I go to GREAT pains to ensure my little Cocker Spaniel ( Brownie ) and the coyotes never "mix it up". My neighbor does not have that option.

This will NOT be one of my better days.

oosik did you see the local TV news about Schweitzer MT.

A Girl skier was chased down the cat track and caught her when she crashed into a tree well hole. The Coyote bit her repeatedly.

She had to have all the Rabbies shots and others.

Speculation is somebody has been feeding them.... and now the coyotes see some humans as food providers. Because of this the only option is to put them down.

This video shows what coyotes can and will do. Just because this is suburban hell, does not mean that they are not aggressive towards your livestock, pets, or children. They are scavengers, but if there is nothing to scavenge, they will, and do, kill.

This should absolutely end any argument as to why every coyote should or should not be destroyed.

Years ago an article ran in one of the trapping/ predator calling magazines, in which the author described experimenting with various calls. He found that distress calls of many animals would call something in…
including the crying of his infant daughter.
He didn’t tell his wife that he had tried that one.

Coyotes are incredible resourceful, they live in some of the biggest cites in America, New York City as well as Chicago.

On the east coast, they are actually a hybrid of the western coyote and I believe the Eastern/Gray Wolf. They clearly don’t look like a western coyote (long legged and skinny), they look more like a smaller wolf (stocky with a bulky head). The ones on our property look pretty big, easily 40-50 pounds, not too many lose dogs or cats survive around here for very long.

It’s unfortunate that your neighbor has to try and control their population but I guess that a consequence of allowing his cattle to “free range”. I hear that coyotes will actually modulate their litter size based upon food availability.

You can exterminate the wolf, like we almost did, but not a coyote, they are just to adaptable.

Coywolves. "Allegedly" we don't have those in IL, but there's been sightings of some very large coyotes around these parts, including by me.

Will say I'm pretty sure they said it was a wolf well after the fact

Just from the headline, my first thought was rabies. Either that or a very hungry animal. Glad to see that the dog is OK.

Having had rabies shots, tetanus shots, and human immunoglobulin shots, for me, at 235#, it was 4 human immunoglobulin shots (one in each thigh and one in each butt cheek), one tetanus shot in the arm, and a series of 5 rabies shots in the arm spaced out several days apart. So 10 total over 3 weeks.

Unless they were spreading the human immunoglobulin shots around the bites, which I was told they do. Since mine were precautionary with no visible bite marks, they just shot my legs and butt.

The immunoglobulin stuff is really thick, and they used a huge needle. And the dosage was based on body weight. So big guy got the big dosage. Ouch!

It says dna test showed it as pure coyote. That's surprising, I would think at least it would be a mix with a husky or something.

You lucked out. Not all Great Pyrenees are that friendly.

Most of northern Nevada is wide open high desert, public (BLM administered) and is used for grazing by huge bands of sheep. Used to be a Basque sheepherder with each flock, but now they seem to all be from Peru. The herders follow along with the flock of sheep - and even though they do have Great Pyrenees with the flock, they still pack a rifle on the horse or mule they ride. Some years ago I was traveling a rough two-track through the desert when I found myself in a huge flock of sheep. Out of the sage came two of the Great Pyrenees and attacked my Jeep. Each one grabbed a rear plastic fender and began tearing at it. I couldn't just speed up to get away from them - the road was too rough. At the time I was really pissed about the damage - but afterwards I laughed about it when I showed my "trail damage" to other Jeepers. Mangled those fenders really good.

These herders are a lot tougher than me. Can't even imagine living outdoors all year, taking care of a flock of sheep. But he ain't packing that rifle on his shoulder just because he like to carry extra weight around. A lot of coyotes follow each flock of sheep.

For several years I mowed a neighbor's 11 acre lot for weed control twice a year. There was one particular coyote I got to know rather well. I am sure it was always the same coyote because of a peculiar triangular shaped hair discoloration on her left hip. The first year she would shyly sneak out of the woods adjacent to the field and pounce on field mice that were exposed as I mowed. Each year she got braver and braver until finally she would walk within a few feet behind the mower and prance and jump on mice that became exposed. She would get her belly full on mowing day. I know that it was a she because one year she had a couple of pups following her once, learning how to pounce on mice.

Yes, things have changed. Now, the actual rabies shot is just a small needle like a flu shot and it's given in the arm in a series of 4 or 5 shots(depending on the medicine and locales), spaced X days apart.

They shoot the immunoglobulin around the wound(s) if visible. And that one hurts a bit. If no visible wounds, then thighs and butt cheeks.

I used to know a priest (now passed away) that grew up on a farm in Iowa. He got bit by a rabid bat on his ankle when he was a teenager. Back then, he said they gave the rabies shots in a circular pattern around his belly button, very deep, and it hurt like heck! There were bunch of them, and the entire area around his belly button turned black for weeks! He'd heard our family had rabies exposure and was concerned we'd all get the same treatment. Thank goodness for advances in medicine.
