No one is perfect, some Danuser points have broke and we always take care of the customer. I would assume if you explain yourself and what happened, they would take care of you and send you another point.

Mr Danuser,
thank you. No one would know this topic better than you
.
My continuing question remains as to what reasonable expectations are for a standard auger bit performance vs. a rock bit in rocky clay soil? Some of the granite rocks taken out were ten inches wide. Nothing bigger but that's no small rock for sure. And if I hit a big rock I know I have to get it out with a bar, not the phd. The oem shear pin was in place, and still is in place.
So maybe this was a simple case of a junk part getting in the mix. But would it be reasonable to expect that the point would not fail before the shear pin?
I thought so, but if this really was a cast iron point, then I'm not at all surprised it broke. But more importantly for me, I don't want to put the same thing back on and have it break again on the same kind of rocks. So I think the smart thing to do is spec a replacement point that is forged, not cast.
Would you agree? Many thanks. Drew

Drew,

When our points would break it was caused by assembly using an impact wrench and overtightened the threads or when we cut the threads in the cast it was too sharp and too deep causing a weak spot. I don't know how the point is held on with a Land Pride. Most of the time the shear bolt should go before the point breaks. You can try to find a forged point but not sure that will solve your problem. Going to a bullet rock auger in my opinion would be a waste of money. The bullet rock augers need torque and down force to work properly. A PTO digger does not provide enough of either. The 3 pt hitch does not provide adequate down force, and the shear bolt will break if it sees too much torque. Plus the bullet rock auger teeth will gum up in the clay and not spin freely which means you will burn up the teeth quickly. Hope this helps.

it sure does, thank you very much. The dealer told me today the bit point was being replaced under warranty, as I expected it would be. It is not a Land Pride bit, so if it breaks again, I'll know to change brands. For now I'll see if I have better luck with the replacement. Appreciate all the input, good learning experience for me.
