Cracked magnets on hydraulic filters......??

Never heard of magnets on an oil filter but makes sense. I put mine on the bottom of the sump casting. Soft iron magnetizes easily and powder could be mixed with an adhesive to reduce the iron content for economy in a formed magnet such as this. As mentioned, they are in the intake side of the filter but I'd still remove (if that's possible) the old ones from the old filters, clean the finds off them and reinstall.

When I replaced my hyd filters with magnets on my M7040 Kubotas, I taped the old magnets to the bottom of the hyd oil filters on other tractors. When I replace those, I change the magnet to the new filter. Having seen what magnets catch over the 20 years I've seen them used I would say it's a great idea. I think the old magnets work just as well as the new ones but don't know for sure. Anyone know for sure?

Alnico 5 is an inexpensive, popular permanent magnet material and the magnetism lasts for decades if not discharged by careless handling. Samarium Cobalt magnets last forever.

On do magnets work or not, some outboard engines to name a source, come with a small magnet embedded in the drain plug. When you drain your oil, you ALWAYS have some metal filings on the magnet. So the question is, are the filings heavy enough to wind up on the bottom of the sump and stay there, or are they in suspension and wind up in the wrong places? Then you ask your self are they less than 20 microns, the size of the filter media for most engine and hydraulic full flow filters? If so, there are bypass filters (flow rates usually 1/10 of the main full flow filter) that run around 5 microns...usually used by OTR truckers with their engine oil....engines that run a million miles with one inframe overhaul.

I've always wondered about micron size. As micron numbers go up, does the size of the particle get larger or smaller? In other words, is 60 micron a smaller or larger size than 40 micron?

I use the magnets out of computer hard drives on the outside of all my filters.
