Has anyone used any repair kits to repair the plastic that has cracked. My plastic hood has a big crack and a small piece broke off and I would rather try to repair it than spend 250 on a new hood.

I used automotive Bondo body filler on my JD rider plastic hood to fix the cracks. It has held up well.

When my son was reckless with his snowmobiles I used to backup the cracks with 1/16" aluminum bent to fit the curvature, smathered with epoxy, and pop rivets.

I've seen similar repair jobs. Can be done pretty neatly too. Much stronger too. Dab a little matching paint on the rivet heads and it can blend in if its an obscure location.

X 3 I've done this many times on ATVs and a few law mower hoods, all have worked out really great. As said a dab of paint on the rivet heads and some epoxy between the plastic and backup plate. Also I usually take corse sand paper or sanding disc and etch both the plastic and backing plate to give the epoxy something to bite to.

PVC pipe cement. I also back it up with the aluminum furnace duct tape to keep the parts in place.

The fibreglass and resin one can find for vehicle repair work well. Bondo for where things need smoothing or contouring. Aluminum, epoxy and pop rivets work well.

My JD4200 has seen all the methods used. Even added aluminum for the latch points.

JD has the fasteners required or automotive ones can be adapted.

Will the fiberglass method stick to the plastic?

My fix was much more extreme. I got rid of the tractor and the replacement doesn't have a plastic hood. :)

I've used a soldering iron to weld plastic before. It probably depends on the type of plastic, but its not too difficult. Some extra donor material will probably be needed. There are youtube videos showing how. It held up well and looked great on my 4-wheeler plastics, after some sanding and paint. Held up good until the kids rolled the 4-wheeler anyway, luckily no one got hurt. No matter what its always good to drill a hole at the end of the crack to keep it from spreading farther.
