(I was going to shorten it to Tool, but that didn't sound right.)

My brother did some developments on the Cape some years back.

Gentlemen - starting to sound more like a quilting bee than a tractor forum . . . . .

Hi Ron and Tool, am from Middleborough and headed to Cataumet in the AM to the Chart Room/Bassets Island for some r&r - have worked in both your towns years ago. Back to the real world Wed. for a project in Chatham. Have had large welds snap on me before (usually in a hurry and blame bad prep - read no pre heat) Grind out weld, wack with the torch and re weld has always been a good solution for me. Not a pro like some of you guys, but gettin pretty good with the right angle G.

For what it's worth here's what I know.

I took a 13 week welding course - so I am an expert - not!

I made a splitter and welded everything with 6011 rods with multiple passes - with chipping between passes. I've seen the 6" i-beam twisted with pressure under huge pieces of oak. Splitter has seen 60+ cords of wood.

No broken pieces or cracked welds. I caved the wedge in (poor design - my fault) and will rebuilt/design this winter. That piece of oak won! 1st piece I couldn't split- very gnarly.

Ron , I'm called Tool a lot ,works for Me.
Ach! You're breakin My Heart. I use to live on 28a in front of N.hill development. Please have a lobster at the Silver Lounge for Me.
Back to welding. Anything as thick as a pencil preheat to 200 degrees with a weed burner. Local weld store sells heat crayons that melt at diff. temps.
On Hi risers,We tac. weld a weed burner on next connection to be welded. It's getting pre heated as We make the cap pass on finished one.
I think the most common weld problems with amature welders is NO PENETRATION. I was a pile Buck. We used salvaged I beams a lot,VERY RUSTY
On this We use 6010 Dc.5/32" BLOWS through the rust, deep penetration.
6011 for AC. Rusty,More Amps. change rod angle.almost verticle! This will flatten out Your Bead
