I have a 1974 eager-1 8HP lawn tractor, it does not run since the Carb needs rebuild, I was curious if I could buy a new 8HP carb from sears. or if it needs to have a carb from around the same time period. I was also curious how much a rebuild kit costs.

If you would fill out your bio (click on your 'My Home' above and do it there) then some suggestions could be forwarded to you about local engine shops that likely could help. I can think of one near me that I would go to for such a part, as well as for a rebuild. Lots of people with small engine shops that are doing this right along, and could likely use your business and help you out.
I found this shop when looking for some odd parts for an older snapper mower, and it was amazing how much he knew and how quickly I received help as well as the parts. Plus, a quick lesson on how to re-thread the starter rope into the mechanism. I was going about it all wrong. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

No Offense intended but I had to laugh. I'll bet you have a hard time getting a carb for a 3 year old Sears model never mind a 31 year old model.

That old stuff was a lot better quality than Sears sells today.

My father in law has a 40 year old Monkey Wards snow blower that looks just like a Simplicity and still runs like a top. He was able to get parts for the cast iron briggs at a local small engine shop.

What meant was not to buy a replacement for the eager-1 from sears but to buy a carb that would go on one of their newer 8HP mowers and put this on the eager-1

I have found a carburetor off a 6.25 HP Craftsaman push mower. It was pretty clean and the float and valves looked like they were in good shape. I put this carb on and engine ran very strong. YESS!!!
