I have a 70's Crafstman Lawn tractor and am wondering how can make it go faster

Change the ratio of the drive belt pulleys, if its belt drive.
Remove the governor, ive seen these engines revv up to 6000, normal is around 3000rpm.
New speedy gearbox
Bigger wheels
Neutral down a steep hill

to name a few....

if you push the throttle butterfly on the top of the carb and see which linkages it moves. disconnect any that arent the cable coming from the hand throttle. OR, set up a new cable going staight to the butterfly to a foot throttle of whatever. This would be better

WARNING, if you revv your engine too much it will blow, this is VERY likely if you revv to 6000, it is very cool when it does blow but gets $$$ fast!

lawnduster, whats your plan for this tractor, is it gunna be a racer or do you just want it to travel faster transport. Youre looking at some serious damage if you mess up with removing the governor. With my statement about the engine revving to 6000, that was about 10 seconds before it blew up and put the piston through the head, very impressive but it did cost about £400 (race tuned honda kart engine). I mean there may be a less dangerous way depending on what you are planning.

I got this tractor for free. It already had the deck removed from it and, after some carb work, I finally got it to run. All it needs is a new battery and It will be in gd cond. I want to find some way to make it go faster and just have fun on it, and maybe race it.
