craftsman tool warranty

When I was at the local Sears this past fall, buying my tool chest. A customer wandered up to the counter and handed the clerk a worn out bench top hand broom. The clerk tossed the old worn out hand broom under the counter and gave the guy a brand new one. Now thats service as far as I'm concerned.

Ten years ago at a garage sale I found a Craftsman 1/2" drive ratchet handle that didn't work. A local Sears store dated it to the mid-1930s. They replaced it without question with any 1/2" drive ratchet handle of my choice.

They wouldn't replace my defective torque wrench.

As far as i know, nobody will lifetime warranty Torque Wrenches, not even the major professional manufacturers. Snap On might have a 1 year, but im not sure. They'll send them out for calibration, but you'll likely have to pay depending on the dealer.

I only have a few Craftsman tools, and havent had a warranty claim denied yet, knock on wood. All my Craftsman tools are made in the USA, and I dont want to replace them with made in China crap. Ive read on some other sites that Craftsman and the others with "lifetime" warranties have begun to get tighter on returns, especially on cases of abuse (using non impacts on a impact gun for example). Ive seen this from Snap On and others. In my case Canadian Tire wont exchange for a complete ratchet, only give you a rebuild kit. A friend of mine had a claim denied because he used a pipe on a mastercraft (Canadian Tire) ratchet. I think in these tighter times, one of the things these companies are going to to save some cash is tighten up on warranties, for better or worse. Im sure they have some CYA language in those warranties to give them the right to deny converage.

I returned a 25 ft. tape measure I think it was a red one. They gave me a yellow tape and told me there is no replacement warranty on it. So much for free, lifetime tape measures from Sears. Terry

Did you know that K-Mart owns Sears!

Years ago I twisted the tip off one of the smaller screwdrivers (hardened machine screw that was, unknown to me at the time, held in with a nut).

They weren't too happy about replacing it, probably due to most people abusing screwdrivers as prybars and punches and scrapers who knows what else and then wanting a replacement. In this case though the screwdriver just met its match.

I like the Craftsman hand tools and Craftsman garden tools, but the power tools leave something to be desired for longevity unless they are over maybe 15 years old, in which case they hold up real well usually. Unfortunately even Sears is going stock out of parts for the old stuff if repairs are needed, I've had to toss several older Craftsman power items when a critical piece wore out and could not be replaced.

Home Depot has a lifetime warranty on their Husky torque wrenches, and they will exchange them.

Good to know. I think that a lot of times, warranty depends on who is working the counter that particular day.

FYI Edit: Quote from another site i visit occasionally RE: Husky Torque Wrenches

"I just bought the 1/2 in Husky Torque Wrench from HD today. I saw the Lifetime Warranty on the packaging, and all my research prior to buying the wrench indicated that this was the general consesus.
On the drive home, I called the number on the back of the package (888-HD-Husky) to get the details. I was informed they removed the lifetime warranty effective 7/27/2007. Thats 8 months ago. I asked her then why are they still printing it on the label? She had no idea, but the booklet on the inside states the new warranty. Sure enough, when I got home and opened it up, the booklet has the 90 day/1 year.
I called three Local HD's here in NC and none of the clerks knew the revision to the warranty. One clerk said he'd honor it if it broke, but who's to say he'll be there in 1 year and a day when this thing breaks."
