I had a similar problem and thought that it was one of the safety switches, especially the pedal switch, as when I pushed it in and out, eventually it would start. THAT WAS NOT THE PROBLEM! Turns out, making and breaking the contact of the switch was shocking the starting solenoid just enough to make it work. Finally though, after much research just as you are going through, I found the starter solenoid had eventually died. Fortuneately, really easy to replace as it's right up top behind the dash under the hood. If this turns out to be your problem, be very careful when tightening the nuts on the terminal studs, as they appear to be brass and break easily. Good luck.
