I learned my lesson with MTD/TroyBilt equipment last year. Lawn tractor is not made to last even though I take good care of it in operation and maintenance. The Kohler engine also has issues as you can find on blogs. I have said it before, but companies that used to have a strong reputation are skimping on quality for the sake of sales. Most of the brand names at my house are Kubota, Toyota, Stihl, Bosch, Honda and Makita. Buying American isn't always the best choice.

1996-7 Audi, for example - no dipstick. AC too - no way to check or add more...Think you will find some vehicle transmissions that have no means of checking or adding oil.

30 yrs old is the key... They still made them to last back then. At least most were.

Many engine manufacturer's produce a series of engines with some being of better quality than others.
Update. I couldn't stand it, my daughter and I took the back end apart, removed the pulley and filled it with 80 90 grease. It took quite a bit, it must have been empty.
I've seen videos of Peerless transmissions taken apart, there are just gobs of grease solidified and none on the shafts chain or in the bushings. The girls use these tractors, around the place, to haul hay, move material or ride the fence line for fun.
