There are so many version of the UNIMOG. A dump truck version or snowblower version would suit me best. You would need a spotter or camera to see what you were doing with that bucket. Maybe good for making oneself a parking spot close to the entrance at the Mall.

Reading the ad, 1300 miles and 20 hours, this one obviously never Deployed. It's brand new!!!! Parts might not be that hard to find since all components are from major companies.
I think it was. Read the rest of that sentence:
"It was built in 1990 It shows 1300 miles and 20 hours with a 2005 complete government rebuild.
I love to drive by our local National Guard post to see the variety of toys like this. On days when we go by and the lot is empty, my son says "they're having fun today!" ;)

The operators I dealt with in Iraq used the bucket very effectively. Guess the learning curve was probably a bit steep. But again, beat the heck out of a shovel. :)

Actually the "rebuilds" are time oriented more than hour oriented. It would have been 15 years old when rebuilt. That's about right. Regardless of use.

Back in the 80s, my friend in the Reserves (48th Highlanders) told me how he turned too sharply in a 2-1/2 ton truck pulling a trailer, ripping off the pintle hook! That story always made me leery about buying Canadian Military surplus.

If you and I add a front bucket and backhoe to our Jeeps they wouldn't flex much either. And our offroading prowess would be dramatically diminished. :)

Our offroading prowess would be severely limited due to the extensive overhang of all the hardware banging into everything. If you took the bucket and backhoe off of the Unimog, the
suspension system still would have no more flex than it does as equipped in the photo. If it did demonstrate more flex, that indicates the existing suspension system is very poorly designed as it is allowing the chassis to sit on the bump stops while the vehicle is motionless. Good flex allows for proper up-travel as well as down-travel as you know.

In the 80's, I was living on Vancouver Island when I met a German guy who had married a local girl. He and some friends had brought an ex German Military Unimog over to Nova Scotia, and driven it across Canada's back woods all the way to the very North West, settling in White Horse, Yukon. He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic on the Pipeline project. Helicoptered in with his 1" drive sockets and big wrenches to fix broken down D-9s and other massive machines stuck in the middle of nowhere. He had some amazing stories about working in minus 40 degree conditions, using canvas tarps and heaters for shelter. The Unimog photos he had looked like it could go pretty much anywhere a man could walk. It looked like it was easily 10' tall, though.

One thing to remember with military hardware such as this is that the hours on the hour meter or the miles on the odometer are only a reflection of how long it's been since the odometer or hour meter was changed they don't necessarily indicate anything about the condition of the equipment or how long it's been since it's been rebuilt.

Have you ever tried to get flex out of a stock Jeep??? They'll barely run over a concrete block......

Nothing about the unimog is poorly designed.... I have one and the flex is beyond belief. Just google images 'unimog frame flex' and see what you get. No comparison to jeeps.
