Steve,

Did you make that picture or is that really what happened?
If the latter, that does put a real punchline on this sequence of events. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Close but no cigar! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

There would be some tracks in the gravel from the big rig sliding in the drink. But it does look good /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

This may seem harsh by some. But in my opinion, considering the way in which they were using the crane, the close proximity to the edge, NO stabilizers "that I can see", the angle that they are lifting at. They got exactly what they should have expected. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif and deserve for being just plain Stupid !!!! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
I sincerely hope that no one was hurt.

As I've said before," It's all in the rigging".
I worked in a factory once where the over head cranes were lifting upwards of 50 tons. I found it very interesting how the riggers made it look like buttering toast. Gerard

I thought something looked funny about that picture as well. It just didn't look quite normal, especially the cab of the truck. Also it appears the angle of that photo is different from the rest.

Well.. it serves the guy in the first crane right.. If you notice.. I don't see any indication of outriggers on his rig, and it is listing pretty spectacularly. At very least he should have winched off to a dock support member or other 'fixed' structure. I've seen a wrecker pull a county mowing tractor and 15' mower out of a retainage pond it fell in. They tied off to the base of a concrete stoplight post.. one of those bif 3-4' diameter jobs.. It didn't go anywhere.. however the 10k pounds of tractor an mower DID come out of the hole...

This crane issue is an example of 'stupid is expensive' at work. As with any work.. you need to pay attention... or you'll be doing it twice..

Reminds me of an audit visit I made to a state DOT construction office. Big news of the day was that their newly-completed runaway truck ramp on a long downgrade had just received its first customer late last night. A fully loaded moving van, and it had run the full length of the gravel pit and got buried to the floorboards with no damage beyond dented fuel tanks. Everyone was pleased that the new facility worked as intended and averted a serious accident.

The bad news was that the wrecker who extracted it had pulled down the lightpole at the entrance. That was the only thing to tie off to, and hadn't been designed as an anchor point. Back to the drawing board...

That picture is a fake. Someone took the picture with the first crane in the water and pasted in the second crane. Note the cars and people in the background. Those cars were not there for the the second crane lift. They were there during the first crane lift.

The pictures are real. Check Snopes.com here and you will see that there was a version of these photos where the second crane goes in as well. That one was fake. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
