Ford 1920 4x4 (traded in on Kubota). Case 480F TLB w/4 in 1 bucket, 4x4. Gehl CTL60 tracked loader, Kubota L4330 GST
In 1994 I bought a new Case 480F TLB to use on my own property. Since I use it less and less every year, I may as well sell it and buy a compact BH attachment for the Kubota. Setting a price is the problem because 1) its not a common model and 2) its no where close to the condition of most used backhoes. Even the sales manager at the local Case dealer was at a loss on how to price it.

The 480 model is a slightly smaller version of the 580 that you see everywhere. It still weights over 13,000 lbs and has a 7500 lb loader breakout force. This one has a 14 ft BH, 4WD, and a 4 in one bucket. I put every one of the 420 easy hours on it and its always been stored inside a fulling enclosed building.

So, since I can't find anything comparable on the market, anyone have a suggestion on fair value of this?

Thanks,

John

There is one listed here Case 480F If this is a true indicator, yours would be worth the price of a new one. Wish I had a more accurate answer for you, but IMO if I were buying somewhere between 15 and 19. If I were selling, probably list it for between 19 and 23. Let us know what you decide, one of us might be able to help you find a buyer.

I would just try to sell it for what you have in mind and if no interest then just keep lowering your price until it sells or you go crazy. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

What are some of your thoughts on the price and I'm sure someone will let you know what they think. Show us some pictures for some more help. Let us know.

Here's picture 1 of 2. It also has street pads, ether start, vandalism protection, and 18 inch hd bucket.

When the thread is titled "creampuff backhoe" my first vision or impression was it would be about a backhoe that was weak and failing in some way, and 'soft' in the middle.
From the pics, this looks like a hoe in great condition and strong and beefy (not a creampuff to me /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ).
Maybe you intend the 'creampuff' to be something identifying condition.

What does creampuff mean? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

How much different is the 480 than the 580? Several times I wish I would not have sold my 580, but I never did use it much. I ended up "giving it away" as far as I was concerned. I'd always kept mine in my barn and it was in fantastic condition. The stinking dealers and the people on eBay didn't seem to care as much about the condition as what model it was. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Mine was only 2wd. If it were 4wd I would likely not have sold it. 4wd makes the loader work so much nicer!

It looks like you have a longer hoe on yours than what mine had. I still had to lower the hoe some to clear my 12' barn door each time. I always worried I'd forget and make a big boo boo. I never did. Anyway, after 3 runs on eBay I finally lowered my price so much that it sold. And, the guy who bought it had the nerve to try to talk me down more after he bought it and was here to pick it up!

If it sits around your place too long, put up more pics of it and I may have to see if I have any more Mason jars buried out back. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I always heard "creampuff" used to describe the little old lady's car that she only drove to church. Might be a local thing. Better not use it in my advertisement.

Dargo, they're a slightly scaled down 580 but I can't quantify that. I never felt the need for a bigger one, even in this S. Indiana red clay.

Yup. It's a nice looking unit. Start putting prices out there (here) so you might just sell this baby to a TBN'er through this thread. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Very nice tractor indeed.

When the 580C was replaced by the 580D(a slightly larger tractor), the niche for a 580C size machine was still there so they renamed it the 480 and popped a detuned CDC diesel (cummins) and away we go.... Yours is probably the most optioned 480 I've ever seen.

This history lesson and $1.25 might get you a cup of coffee though you might be a little short these days... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Certainly perks my interest.... Let us know what kinda pricing you come up with.

Might be a local thing. Maybe it's an age thing, unfortunately, I knew what you meant. You can't sell it, you haven't even worn the paint off of the bh bucket. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Scott,

Haven't come up with anything yet since getting side tracked on some other stuff. Thanks for the info on the 580C ancestry for this model though. Ironically, the dealer told me when I bought it that it was the last year they were going to make the 480. He said their plan was to roll it back in to the 580 line.

The 580D is no bigger than the previous 580C. It was the same exact class model, except revamped. The differences to the D vs C, one was New Cab Style, Clutch Cut-Out Button on the Loader Lever, and improved hydraulics. The backhoe attachment was exactly the same, the loader was exactly the same.

The 480 Class has been discontinued in the end of 1994. In 1995, the 480F was completley gone along with the 680L. The new L series came out in 95, and that lineup was, 580L, 580SuperL and 590SuperL. However, the 480's were out, the same time the 580's were out. Original 480 Class, was the 480CK (construction king), then the 480B, then the 480C, 480D, 480E, 480LL (landscape loader) then finally the 480F(which was the last 480 produced)..

As far as the cummin's diesel engine you mention, the 580E was the first Loader/Backhoe to have this engine. The 580D was not, the 580 Super D, was the first Case Construction King to offer 4WD, with more HP, but it was a case engine.

When it comes to Case Backhoes I know them by heart, I am like "Rain Man" on this subject. I have every Case Brochure from when the construction king was introduced in 1957. As a Kid, I've studied the facts and figures on these machines, and I grew up using them all, as each model came out because of my Dad's Best Friends Backhoe Business. I was a hooked on Case kid.

The 480B, and the 480F were the only 480's to have the "Reverse Power Linkage" design on the loader buckets like all the 580's had. The Reverse Power Linkage is a great design that is exclusive to case. The other 480's had straight piston to bucket connections, similar to most Compact tractor loaders. What is great about the Reverse Power Linkage is super fast dump cycles, and more breakout power when curling the bucket. When dumping the bucket, with power linkage, the small end or fast end of the cylinder is used. When curling the bucket, the power end of the cylinder is used.

The 480D was the first 480 to have the Over Center Backhoe Design which was great for transporting the machine, because when in Over-Center, the weight of the hoe was aimed toward the center of the machine, and also provided excellent clearance between groundline and backhoe bucket. And of course this made the overall length of the machine shorter. This was another case exclusive. The 580B was the first Construction King, to incorporate an Over-Center Backhoe design. All of the 580's from 580B to 580E, incorporated twin boom cylinders, where all of the 480's had just one boom cylinder mounted to only one side of the boom.
580K was a completly revamped design all together, it had just one very large boom cylinder, in a totally redesigned cast ductile Iron boom. This is still used on the Current 580M's.

JCM's 480 has the optional 14' hoe. Case offered 3 hoes for the 480D, and the 480F.

12' standard (non-extendahoe) was the standard hoe.
14' optional (non-extendahoe) Longer boom, same dipper as 12' foot hoe.

and of course they offered the Hydraulic Extendahoe which had the shorter boom found on the 12' standard, but had the telescoping dipper that would extend to (12' to 15') digging depths.

If anybody ever has any questions about any case backhoe feel free to just ask me. I have most of the answers right in my head, and of course like I said, I have every manual, and brochure on these.

Jason,

Any chance you know anything about Case dozers? Specifically the 1550??? She's a unique monster that can do just about anything, but when she's feeling poorly, I'm feeling poorer. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Try checking the auction results from Yoder & Frey, Ritchie Brothers, Iron Planet etc. That may give you a starting point. If your going to sell it I'm interested in buying particularly if it is a 4X4 and 4in1 bucket. Got any pictures?

I really don't see why you couldn't get at least $28,000 minimum for your machine. It is obviously in great shape, with super low hours. I would set my price for 31k-32k, and see what happens. If it had a full cab, I would buy it off you.

I know some about the Dozers. But not like I do the Backhoes. What's going on with your machine?
