Creating a Home for Sam

Hey, Eddie, real nice job and I'll bet Sam appreciates it, too, even if the finer points of the construction are beyond him. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

It gets a bit colder up my way, 'specially this time of year. So when I built a doghouse for our Newfie, Wally, about 11 years ago, I used 2x6s on walls and roof rafters and a double floor w/2x4s in between. Insulated walls, roof and floors and designed with an inner room shielded from direct wind.

Wally doesn't bother to go in much except on real cold nights or heavy, driving rain. His undercoat is so thick that except for what falls on his nose, it would have to be raining for about a week for him to notice it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nice Dog, nice house ...they go together well.

Something terrible happened last night.

Steph just got home from work and was walking up to the house. I stepped outside to meet her while he son was playing with Sam. Her son, who's 5, came up to us with Sam right behind him.

Sam sat down just like normal, but than attacked her son. He bit him 3 times in the face before I could get him off. It was so fast I didn't even realize what was happening at first, or what to do.

He was bleeding pretty bad from his lip. We made an ice pack and brought him to emergancy. During the wait, the bleeding stoped and he settled down quite a bit. Even to the point of joking around with us.

His lip was the worse part damaged, but he has claw marks on his chest, arms and back. I never saw the claws on him, but his shirt was torn in the process.

The doctor said that no stitches were needed, which is a good thing because it's better to leave these types of wounds open. He prescribed two anti biotics for him.

The Sheriff also came in and interviewed us. He said there were no reports of Rabies in the area, but that we should have Animal Control pick up the dog and have it tested.

Animal Control came and got him this morning. His head is on the way to Austin for testing as I write this. They want the results as fast as possible due to the injuries being to the face.

Now we wait.

Eddie

Man, Eddie, that terrible news...look, before anything irrational is done, have the dog tested for tumors especially in the area of his brain. The tumor will cause the dog to turn...we had a golden do this. He also may be showing behavior that got him dropped off in the first place though. I hope everything works out. Don't carry any blame, buddy, you did nothing wrong. Animals do the strangest things sometimes. It looks like the little guy will heal fine. Keep us posted and let us know how we can help.

Eddie,
that's a terrible thing to have happen.. I feel terrible for
all involved, the boy, you, Steph, and even the pup.

Years ago, we took our 10wk old Choc lab to some obedience training, in a class with about a dozen other dogs. Our dog was very large for his age, but younger than most. He made some great friends at school, (you'd swear he fell in love with this certain golden pup!). anyway, there was this one beautiful german shorthaired pointer... just beautiful. The owners had their hands ful though.. and it was brought up that these breeds can tend to be on the somewhat highstrung side. He didn't even make it thru the full 6 or 8 weeks of school... they stopped bringing him because he was such a handful.
Do you know how old the pointer may have been? And not knowing what his previous life may have consisted of, it's so hard to find a cause for this behavior. The boy may have triggered something from his past, a scent or action. Or, a health problem , it's possible you will never know the real reason "why".

Glad the boy will be ok.. I'm sure he will be very careful now
around dogs, and that's too bad, because for the most part dogs love us unconditionally.

Hope you all can dust yourselves off and get on with your lives quickly.

</font> He's being tested for rabies, according to Eddie's post. That means he has already been put down. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Maybe I'm dead wrong here but why would you have to put the dog down to test him for rabies?? The vet clinic my wife works at does a blood test of some sort, or so I thought....
