I had a underground leak at my farm near a water faucet and since I knew it was about 30" down in rock hard Alabama red clay I wasn't relishing the idea of digging it up - particularly since it is so dry right now. Really didn't want to use the bucket and root up a large area.

Had an idea. Removed one fork from my pallet fork attachment and used the single fork for 90% of the work. Used a skinny trench shovel to finish the last few inches. Worked great.

Wow, i would have never thought of that. Thats a really good idea, I will have to try that out sometime. I have found that pallet forks work great for clearing land because you can get your fork under small stumps and either lift or push them out of the ground. They also can move logs and can move tree limbs with ease. and best of all, i did it on a bobcat skid steer.:D:cool::p;)

That is a clever idea, and hope I will remember it when I need that idea. Your fork must come off easier than mine, as I'd have to dismantle a bit to get one off. But for a neat trench in clay, that just might be worth the extra effort.
Thanks for the tip.

Another GREAT use for the forks is moving brush piles.
It is hard to believe how large of a brush pile you can securly move with pallet forks. Sometimes piles twice the size of the tractor.
I live on a bumpy and sometimes steep hillside.
I almost always make it all the way to the burnpile without losing a single stick. Try it!

That is certainly a cool idea, and from the pictures one that seemed to work pretty well for you.

It did work far better than I expected - likely due to the clay being very dry and hard. You can tell from the pic there wasn't any issue with the trench caving in on itself.

Beenthere, yep, the forks remove easily. Slide them to the middle, tilt the heel away from the frame (there is an associated cutout in the frame) and lift the fork up and away. No tools and takes less than a minute. These are made by Construction Attachments.

Since I don't have a grapple (yet) I have used these for brush and tree removal and they do work pretty good. Need to find the balance point for trees, tho. They will pop a smilax vine root ball right out of the ground also.

I had to bury a dog on new years day and in Canada that means the ground is frozen so out came the pallet forks to the rescue. I just slid them together. Just this spring I was removing fence posts and again slid the forks together and wrapped a chain around them to keep them together then I pushed against the post an inch or two below ground level and lifted. There was a natural v shape created by the round ends of the forks. Popped out about fifty posts in less than an hour and never broke a sweat.

Neat trick with the fence posts also, will have to remember that.

Yeah great idea, you could use that technique to dig a trench for a new installation of any type of conduit or wire/cable up to the width of the fork.

My forks are the same. where there is a spot in the center to remove them.
I'll have to remember this :)
