I had the same insurance on my house from '95 when I bought it until they shuffled the Lloyd's companys to dump people in Texas. At least, that is my theory. My Lloyd's company changed names so I had to re- apply and my dumpy little shack didn't meet the new Lloyd's companies criteria. I went bare for a while until they came up with the insurance pool. I hadn't had any claims of any type but, with my tractor and trailer in the driveway it looked like a " commercial" property so they wouldn't insure it. I asked for a commercial quote and they wouldn't give me one. I asked if they would insure me if I junked the tractor and he said no, they just wanted to insure "conventional looking" houses. I asked him just what the freak a conventional looking house was supposed to look like and he couldn't give me an answer. Crappy neighborhood, new excuse to redline. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Where does it end? Last year, our homeowners carrier (Penn Mutual) dropped the state of Md. Said their profits were not high enough. So, we ended up switching to Carroll County Mutual (CCM). CCM later raised our rate by 26% stating that the Md. Insurance Commission decided their rates were too low. Received a letter yesterday about CCM being under review by the state for their financial management practices (profit margins are too high). /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Could have been worse, our friends had the same original company (PM) and made a claim because of tornado damage. When PM dropped them, they became a high risk home and could not get insurance! Had to get his mom's name on the deed to be able to get insurance at all.
Why do they get away with the things they do? Because the state and federal gov't declare we have to have insurance? But isn't the gov't supposed to be comprised of you and I, not those people you see on TV in their limos and plush surroundings?

They get away with it on home, auto, and health insurance because the insurance industry is the biggest, by a LONG way, in the country. This is at the city, county, state, and federal levels. It's really nothing more than organized crime. As long as they make huge profits everything is ok. But as soon as things start coming down and they dont' make that profit again they are going to play dirty. Home and auto bothers me but it infuriates me when these idiots are denying care right and left for people that need it. For most patients anymore I spend more time doing the paperwork than I do seeing the patient. And that is not an exaggeration one bit. I will send in a treatment plan that is right by the book. I will have patients with every criteria for care and they will bog it down in more paperwork or deny it and make you go through appeals. It used to just happen on a few people. Now it's more like 70% that get flagged for no reason at all. The insurance company plays their own game period and they make up and change the rules as they go to suit them.

This isn't a new thing with the insurance companies. Over 30 years ago my parents had the same insurance company for home and vehicles. They had a fenced in yard and a St Bernard dog. Now St Bernard’s are anything but vicious.

Anyway, a kid from up the street decided it would be fun to beat the dog in the head with a bat. The dog would always run up to the fence looking for treats or to get a pat on the head. The kid reached over the fence and started beating the dog. The dog took three or four solid hits and then bit the kid on the arm. The kid’s mom sued and the insurance company didn't even attempt to fight it. They just paid.

Then they cancelled all my dads’ policies for keeping a "vicious dog". And my mom lost her job because that insurance company insured the school busses where my mom drove. They wouldn't certify her because anyone that keeps a "vicious dog" is too high a risk.

That is just sickening. Then they wonder why there are people that go "postal". G
