I am wondering exactly what pump you guys would suggest? the creek is about 50-60ft. lower then my house and it is about 300 ft away from the house..

I have the same setup.. 60ft drop.. 400ft run.. I use a deep well pump(it's the org. well pump I had replaced from my well). I only use it for irrigation.. no pressure tank.. runs 2 sprinkler heads.

I use a hotwater heater timer switch.. the pump just sits on some rocks in 2 ft of water.. no problems in 3 years it's been in the creek.

Since you have the creek why did you dig a well?
Why didn't you use the creck back then and do what you're talking about now?

Good question. I wish I would have. It would have saved me a TON of money. But, as the saying goes, " hind sight is 20/20". To be honest I never really thought about it and I didn't really think the water was of such good quality. Out of desperation I had it tested and it is very good water.

I know this thread is about getting water from the creek, but I had the same problem with heavy iron at my place and went this route:

Fleck and Autotrol Auto-Backwashing Whole-House Filters

I also added the water softener after it. All said and done, I got the parts for roughly 2k through my connection and put them in myself. I couldn't be happier. No more iron stains/smell/etc and I drink the water right out of the tap.

Food for thought.

Been there, done that. it seemed to work O.K. for about 6-8 months. then it just seemed to not be able to keep up. I can't remember exactly how high my iron content in the well is but I know it is extremeley high.
I am done with all the filters ( each one superior to the next according to the dealers...lol ) I have dropped around 4-5 grand into them and they all seem to only last a few months.
Thnaks for the suggestions though....

I have iron in the well water. Don't recall the numbers but it was not good enough for the board of health. Searched for larger automated filter systems but found none I thought would do the job. So I tried a simple cartridge filter. Used a 1 micron filter element from Grainger and now the water is wonderful. Board of health approves and no more iron staining of clothes, etc. Change the filter element about once every 2 months.

I have run into the same thing with home water treatment. They always have another solution for a new problem that you now have.

My concern with your system is that creek water can change a lot. A deer pees into the creek, etc. I have always heard that you should not use creek water for drinking. Does anyone else have this concern? Maybe you could put a reverse osmosis filter on your drinking water or a distiller. I am not an expert by any means.

Coould you provide a link to this filter?

BobRip,

Yes that is a concern. That is why I am going with a chemical pump and UV light for sure.
