The Mexican Air Force has landed.
Boon's hat band is all gone.
Picture 1 & 2 are the first buzzard to land. he was joined by the other guy & they shared for a little while. Then buzzard #3 showed up & chased them off. Then they chased it off. The chasing went on for quite a while, until there was no snake to fight over.
Picture # 1 & 2 are the first one on the scene. Pic #3, the snake was torn in half & they were eating.
Yesterday I thought the small birds were cleaning up the left over scraps. They must have been eating the ants & bugs. buzz 1.jpg -buzz 2.jpg -buzz 3.jpg

They Just Keep Coming. Rattler #6.
Around 8:30 I heard the familiar sound. Dogs saying snake. Opening front door, I could hear the buzzing. Get trusty pellet rifle, small sharp shovel and go looking. Sounded like it was under the house. Nope, under a stack of plywood. After moving, there it was, coiled & ready. BB through its head, as it struck. One more BB just for good measures.

Pictures are after moving it out to the front yard. Want to see what the birds & rabbits do. So far a curve bill did some checking, but not very close.

What kind of rattlesnakes are these? besides dead, of course!

Local name is Coon Tail. They are Mojave rattlesnakes.

Most species of rattlesnakes can control how much venom to inject and have hemotoxic venom, destroying tissue, causing necrosis and coagulopathy (disrupted blood clotting).[30] In the U.S., some varieties of the Mojave rattlesnake (C. scutulatus) also have a presynaptic neurotoxic venom component known as Mojave Type A toxin, which can cause severe paralysis.[30][31][32] C. scutulatus is widely regarded as producing one of the most toxic snake venoms in the Americas, based on LD50 studies in laboratory mice.[33]

We have timber rattlers around here. I've probably killed 3 this year. Biggest was about 4 1/2 ft. The one pictured was killed around the first of July, only about 3 ft.

Have also heard them called "velvet tails"

Darn things are pretty. Shame they are so deadly.

Many years ago while working on a ranch in the mountains, I was coiling a hose around a rim, out of the corner of my eye, I saw movement. As my hand went around the rim a rattlers head was going back and forth, maybe sizing me up for a strike.

Owner of the ranch came down 7 we killed it. It had a greenish or chartreuse color, kind of pale. Owner said it was a timber rattler. Only 1 like that I have ever seen.
It like the ones here, often rattle only after they strike & will strike several times.

I've only seen them on the road that goes to our house never out in the pasture. A few years ago I saw a fella that had skinned a timber rattler that he had killed and used it to face his recurve bow, really cool design. He also had one made with a copperhead. Been chomping at the bit ever since to try and make my own but I don't even have enough time to start hand making a bow let alone finish one out!
