Jumped on the tractor for the 50 drive to the property and the cruise didn't work. When I parked it Sat night it worked just fine and Sunday morning no go. When I push the switch the light comes on and stays on but the pedal doesn't stay. I've done a search on the cruise control and have a direction to go to see if I can figure out what the problem is. Only 20 hours on the clock.

It's not a lot of fun holding the pedal down for the 50 minute drive each way and you sure appreciate the cruise. Bad part is I'm out of town till Wed and I plan to work the property all weekend. I've put a call into the dealer to see if he can do something to get it fixed before the weekend.

Other than that I had a great weekend on the tractor. Even got to try out the 4wd when the left front wheel found the soft spot. Works Great:D

Greg,

Forgive me if this seems too simplistic, but is it possible the switch at the brake pedals is keeping the cruise from engaging? I know you said the green light is illuminated, but maybe the brake pedal switch is causing the problem. The only other spot I can think of would be the solenoid at the HST pedals. I'd be interested in what the dealer discovers, since your warranty should cover this.

Good luck & keep us informed please. Thanks

MDD, thanks for the post. After reading the past posts on the cruise the brake switch is something I was going to look at. This site and the folks on it are great and I really appreciate the help. I'll be sure to let everyone know what it is once I find out.

1. Loose wire at the electromagnet that energizes onto the HST swash plate.

2. Loose mounting screws for the electromagnet bracket.

The brake switch should not be the problem. It would cause the green light to go out also and you said that the green light stayed on. Chris mentioned two possible problems. It could also be something between the magnet and the plate that won't let the magnet establish enough friction to hold the plate in place.

I'm attaching a couple of pictures from when I had my HST pedal problem and disassembled the operator's platform. You won't see things as clearly as the picture shows, but at least these will show you where to look. The first picture has the plate removed and the red arrows show the cruise magnet and the connector. The second photo shows the plate in place.

You do not have to have the tractor running to troubleshoot the cruise control. Start with the wheels blocked or the tractor on a flat surface. Just turn on the key with the brakes released and press the cruise button. You should hear the magnet engage and disengage with the cruise control switch turned on and off.

Thanks Jinman and DocHeb. I'm in lovely Dayton Ohio until Wed. I plan to take Friday off so I'll check it out and let you know. The dealer's mech called me last night and he thought it was the break switch. He did say that if it's not the switch it could be a bad magnet. From reading the past posts on the cruise I had the same thoughts that you pointed out. I also know what to look at and how to do it from all the info that has been shared on the cruise. If the light stays on then the break switch is not likley the problem and it's at the other side with the magnet itself or a connection. I'll run it down on Friday and let you all know what I find.

Jinman, how much trouble was it to take the platform off to get a good look at the magnet area? I guess I need to spring for the shop manual, just don't know why it's so high priced.

Thanks again,

Greg

Greg, it was so much trouble that if I had it to do again, I probably would not do it. It made me hate the raised/flat operator's platform and long for the days when you straddled the running gear and sat on a seat attached to the transmission. It was a serious pain in the "patoot."

I figured out how much trouble it was going to be about half-way through the job. By that time it was too far to turn back and I had to continue. The final straw was having to take off a couple of the bolts that attach the loader uprights. The NH dealer was very helpful and even offered to loan me some tools, but all I asked of them was to re-weld (properly) the plate once I had it removed. They did a great job and I learned my lesson...

Before you tear anything apart. Check the brake switch. My green light was on and stayed on with the switch engaged. There is a little plate that activates the switch for the cruise. Mine was a tiny bit off and did not allow the cruise to work. I bent the plate with my hand and all is well.

Ok, I'll go for the easy stuff first and take it from there. I was still planning on finding the break switch just to know where it is and how it works. Now I'm really interested in find out what the problem is. It's nice to go into the gun fight with bullets in your gun.....:D I'll be sure to post results.
