Please read my original post, maybe click the link. ;)

Nothing else to say other than let us know how it works out for you...

it was determined that the viscosity of the Cub oil was closer to either 15w -50 or 20w-50

Sounds like the amsoil is 5w-30....a little light in the lofers to me

so let us know how it goes

Gotcha. I saw the amsoil hydrostatic drive oil in your first post, then gear oil mensioned in another. Good luck with the amsoil. Post back on how it works out for you. If it's cheaper and easier to get that the CC stuff, it's a good find!

Amsoil has been around since about 1972. Maybe someone else has, but I have never heard or read about someone having problems after using their products. After experiencing the performance I got from my motorcycle and mower using Amsoil I trust it. Anyway, they state that they will pay for any damage that can be shown to be directly related to use of their oils. I'll let ya'll know how things go. Thanks for the comments.

I'm very familiar with amsoil and used it years ago. My brother was a "dealer" back then. I don't bother with the high dollar or boutique stuff anymore unless it's an OEM spec (like the CC drive system fluid plus). Hi dollar 'synthetic' lubes never did anything magical for me aside from lighten my wallet.

I know nothing about the Amsoil hydro oil product, but have heard only good things about thier products especially from fellow diesel operators. But one thing I do know is to not substitute the hydro trans fluid filter with an automotive engine oil filter. Auto oil filters most often contain an anti-backflow and pressure relief valves that cannot be used with the hydrostatic transmission system. Get an OEM filter for the tranny, well worth the few extra bucks for the right thing there. Just MHO, but I tend to agree with the others to use the OEM recommeded stuff all the way with the hydros. You don't change the fluid all that often, so it shouldn't be a considered cost prohibitive maintenance task. The Sunstrand hydro in my 682 is 26 years old and has always operated without a hitch, so I can attest to the quality of the fluids Cub Cadet has sold, the same can't be said for Amsoil in the case of my Cub Cadet ownership.

Correct on the valve in the filter, they put them in those meant to be mounted horizontially. I don't plan to use a car filter here as I do on my bike.

I have a 2518 and I just use what OEM asked for. You can't go wrong then!

So you would be willing to go through all that instead of using what is specified by the OEM ?? as well as what you want to use dosent look like a direct replacement either....

FWIW, the wix/affinia hydro filters from carquest or napa are hydraulic filters. They are pricey though, if I remember correctly, the carquest one ran me over $10. Might as well price them at a dealer first. I havent touched the trans oil or filter since the spring of 2005. I might swap out the trans filter for the spring/summer of 2007.

OK, I give in for now. After thinking it thru again I decided that since I am not going for extended drain intervals the Amsoil would not be that great a benefit. I do believe that synthetics are superior in most applications though.
I went ahead and changed it today with the Cub stuff, the Amsoil would take 8-9 days to get here and it will turn off cold again here in NC before then. Happy Holidays everybody!

tmblweed, a few of us did some extensive research on Cub Cadet Drive System Fluid Plus hydrostatic oil some time ago. Not sure if this is what your 2518 specs, but it should work with it anyway. Drive system fluid plus is made by Shell and is named Shell TTF-SB. Not to say other oils will not work perfectly, it's just that finding an exact match for Shell TTF-SB has been unsuccesful. I couldn't even get the folks at Hydro-Gear to offer an alternative. They wont go against CC's wishes (obviously). It's all good anyway. The CC oil is around $9/qt, but you rarely have to change it over the life of the unit. I use the napa/carquest/WIX equiv for my filters. Transaxle Filter = Carquest # 85410 (Wix filter). It's a pricey filter where ever you go.

As a follow up, I have been using the Amsoil synthetic transmission oil for 10 years now w/o changing. Tractor runs and pulls great still.
