I have a CC 2140 that needs hydrostatic transmission work. The OEM price of $1100 plus labor for a replacement is prohibitive. I have not found anyone locally to repair mine at this time of the year and I do not have the knowledge or the manuals to do this. Anyone know of a used, rebuilt, remanufactured, or aftermarket replacement. I would be greatful. The numbers are: Tractor Model 135-232-100, Serial #295-453, other number on plate BO65G8; Decal on Transmission, Model #616-3080, Serial # 34-707

$1100+ is totally insane. You could try eBay, or scour the net for a used/rebuild/reman unit. Do you know off hand if this is a peerless or a hydro-gear unit? On the newer hydro-gear units, the hydrostatic drive portion of the transaxle just unbolts from the front (input end) of the diff. Real simple to R/R. Drop the driveshaft & remove the external hydro drive unit from the diff. Are you positive yours is shot & it's not a low oil, linkage or brake hanging up issue?

I bought this unit used and took it to a shop that said they could replace the transmission for $300--the usual cost of a new transmission for a Craftsman, Troy-Built,etc. When they checked with two Cub Cadet dealers they got a price of $1100. They are not a dealer and have no way to cross ref. the trans numbers. I don't know the manufacturer. I have talked to two dealers and get the same price. Cub Cadet transmissions must be very good--at least the manufacturer thinks so. I am going to pick it up tomorrow and check the oil, filter, etc.
