Cub Cadet 2165

I saw a 2165 for sale today, the info on it said it had a B&S engine, 42" deck, and 659 hours. He's asking $600. It looks good, except it has a bald front tire and one nearly bald. I know of this person, and I think he is pretty much a perfectionist. The machine is clean, looks like it has been garaged. What are the weak points on this model machine? Does it have a Vanguard engine?

Yes, it was a Vanguard, 16hp. A great motor and tractor. Really, the only difference between that one and mine (a 2004 model) is 2 hp. I absolutely love my 2180 and I think you will like this tractor.

As far as weak points, operator comfort is probably the greatest. I'm 6'2" and I am very comfortable on my Cub. But there are times I wish for a little more leg room. But I never have to get off my tractor because my legs or arse are numb, it is comfortable. Very easy to work on and reliable. Vanguards have been known to get 1500 to 2000 hours on them before a rebuild. It is a commercial engine so its tough. A couple new tires and a good grease job, blade sharpening and it sounds ready. $600 doesn't sound out of line.

Yes, it was a Vanguard, 16hp. A great motor and tractor. Really, the only difference between that one and mine (a 2004 model) is 2 hp. I absolutely love my 2180 and I think you will like this tractor.

Thanks for your comments. I went by and talked to the owner today, a really nice guy. He bought it new in '98 and changed the oil 3-4 time a year. He said it uses NO oil and the hydro has never given any problems. I told him I'd take it and he immediately knocked $100 off the price. He had all the manuals and repair tickets since new. I used it a little while this pm and it seems to do fine.

I'm new to the Cub Cadet mowers, so I'll probably be asking more questions as time goes on. He said he always mowed with the deck wheels on the ground. I thought it should be suspended. The manual doesn't address the issue. Any comments? Thanks for any advice.
