I just purchased my new Cub Cadet, 22 hp, hydro, 46 inch cut. Its a well made machine but I hate the fact it will not mow in reverse. Just because some fool didn't look where he was backing, I have to suffer with a handicap. I got rid of my older Murray but sure miss mowning in reverse in those tight places. I will try and figure out how to disable that function as soon as its out of warrantee. Are all new mowers like this? I know the White is. How about a warning lable instead?
Maybe they should disable the forward mow too in case some of the old timers do not watch where they are mowing.

Its a legal thing, Kubota has a work around manual button that will let you mow in reverse. They are the only one that I know of right now.

Welcome to the world run by the lawyers!!!

A while back I saw a safety sticker on the deck of a lawn mower instructing people not to grab the deck with their hands and lift the mower while it was running to use it as a hedge trimmer.

I love my Cub Cadet, it is a very well made machine. Fortunately, mine is old enough that it will mow in reverse. I've been looking at new equipment and am sorry to say that some other brands are also adopting the LAWYERS RULE OVER COMMON SENSE philosophy of running their companies, I fear that in the next few years no lawn tractors will mow in reverse.

When I bought one in 1995 and found it wouldn't mow in reverse, I told the dealer he had to show me how to disable that before I would buy it. He claimed he couldn't legally disable it, but could show me the connector to simply unplug it. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif And I sure wasn't going to wait until the warranty was up.

My first cub had the same safety feature. Took me all but 5 minutes to remove it. Like Bird said I did not wait until the warranty was up. Not that I recommend it, but that's what I did. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Its designed to be a simple procedure because people do complain of the lack of reverse....Not sure of your model but on my 3204, you will need to look at the foot pedals underneath the machine. Look closely to where the reverse pedal contacts and you will see a plunger and a small metal tab...if you move the metal tab you are good to go...no cutting wires or jumping switches...

Many thanks,
I can see this board is going to be a big help to me in the future. I will make the modification and be a happy mower next trip to the lawn. One thing I noticed about the 22 HP Brigs and Straton V-Twin motor in the Cub, it gets a lot better gas mileage than the pancake 18 hp B & S I had on the Murray.

Just make sure that the machine is not running when you look underneath at the foot pedals.

Sorry.... couldn't resist. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I use a 2166. I love the machine but I absolutely, positively, definately HATE the fact that I cannot mow in reverse. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif As soon as the warranty is up, that dumb little "safety" feature is out of there! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Why wait? the metal tab can be moved back in a few seconds...when I got my 3204, as soon as the truck left, I moved the tab....had a smile ever since /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
