Was a member years ago but have not posted for long time so had to re-join. Bought mower in 06 and have had difficulty with getting a clean (no mid-furrow) cut until this week. I have tried all the different types of blades, raised the shut cover 2 inches, etc., etc. Had to clean deck with hose from underneath each time. Have about 2+ acres to cut. Hose wash from top of deck was almost useless.

While looking at the deck last week and pondering the design, I was focused on the 1 inch metal strip that goes along the bottom rear of the deck protruding underneath and what its purpose was. I had owned an old Yardman 42 inch cut that really cut nice and clean and wondered about the difference so I removed the metal strip. It runs the width of the deck. I theorized it was added to cover safety concerns as this was about the time that the reverse cutting sequence was initiated and the chute really lowered so I removed the metal strip held by 5 bolts.

Turns out I was right. It was the first clean cut in 6 years. Previously the center section always built up a large t-shape section of grass at the bottom rear center point of the deck. This altered the transfer of the grass from the left blade to the right blade and left the mid-deck furrow as the grass clump built up. This time the underside of the deck was very clean like the old 42 inch mower I had? finally success.

Just thought I would pass that along if the new 42s still have that strip of metal. Its purpose I guess was to prevent any obstacles from being thrown out from under the deck by the left blade. So often the Lawyers make our lives so difficult.

Good info! Sometimes you've got to make modifications for your specific conditions. You generally don't hear of cut-quality issues with the 42". It usually does an excellent job provided you don't try to mulch with it.

Hi Joel, I remember your name from 6 years ago when I was on. At that time I listed a rear bumper mod by welding a piece that went horizontal to line up with the hitch pin. This was needed as I Installed an older snow blade that used the hitch pin for the push attachment. Just used the front bumper as a building block and mounted it on the rear. As I remember the holes were already there or at least one set. I tack weld the nuts to the bumper for ease of assy.

Back to the cutting - I wonder how many years that piece of metal design was used on. Next time at at the dealers I'll check into that. I might even try the mulching blade now that the underside does not build up grass clumps anymore. I have hi-lift, mulcher, and gater blades.

The only thing I've done in 6 years is general maintenance and replaced an ignition switch that the mud wasps like to hid in, and clean out the mice nests under the engine covers. Runs great.

Sorry, I meant the front of the deck, not the rear. I was engrossed in looking at it upside down. I looked in the parts list and its called a skirt.
Also went back and found some of my old posts. I used vtcress back then but forgot what I used or the password but that was 6 years ago.

VT Cress - a fellow Vermontah, Ayup!

I read this thread a couple of weeks ago. Then removed the skirt on my 50" deck and tried mowing...jeezum crow....what a difference...the cut is like I have an all new tractor!!

Good find!

Wow, same problem with the LT-1042, not so great of a cut. I'll try removing the skirt and see how it cuts.

Hmmm-I wonder if there is anything I can remove on the 48" fabricated deck on my GTX2000 to help.
