We've been buying packages of cucumbers at Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. They are about six to eight inches long and an inch or so in diameter. Best tasting cucumbers I've ever had. Anybody have an idea what kind they are so I can order seeds?

My wife grew some last summer that were very similar. I will see if she still has the seed packet and let you know what they were.

Are those cukes pretty near seedless with a real thin skin, kinda/sorta sweet tasting?

For several years now I've been raising Sweet Success, everybody around here absolutely loves them.

The only downside is that they have to be planted several hundred feet from other cucumbers or they'll have more seeds from the cross.

They're not cheap by any means, but I'd sure get on the wrong side of my wife if I decided to not plant them anymore, they are that good.

If I remember rightly, Walmart has Ferry-Morris and Burpee seed displays and even one for "Organic" growers. Some are for pickling and some are for fresh. After that, some are seedless, some are burpless and some are old standard varieties. Guess you'll have to read the packet information.

There is a new slicer type recently out a seedless long cuke Lisboa It's what is called Parthenocarpic sets its own fruit and needs no extra pollination. You can grow it indoors greenhouse, tunnel style, or outside in the garden. I'm after my boss to do some in the greenhouse for an early sales crop this year. Vesey Seed is one place that has it

Google it..

The "Sweet Success" cuke that Gunny posted about is also a parthenocarpic

I have good luck with " Straight Eight" which like the name they are straight and about 8" long.
I had trouble finding the seeds at the big stores a couple years ago for some reason. ???

I bet they just sold out fast. That one has been a very popular cucumber choice for years.

Plus it's an OP Heirloom too :D

Since we're on the subject, I like to grow my cukes vertical on nylon netting. They are easy to find (pick) and are clean. You can use anything to make the frame for the net. I use metal fence posts with Schedule 40 1/2 plastic pipe attached. This method also save space in the garden.
Cheers,
Mike

Cukes grown on a trellis are supposed to form up straighter too!

I've grown many different ones over time. On the commercial types I had one called Dasher. I wasn't all that fond of it fairly short lenghth 7"-8" but quickly got too fat around. On the other hand it was a seriously heavy producer. Honestly I never had so many cucumbers in my life. Good for making lots of long sliced pickles tho. :D

I replaced it with Thunder that was good for me. Now I mostly grow what we sell at work. We have RaiderF1 along with some other older OP varieties.

I used to like to grow the Beit Alpha cucumbers. Mediterranean or middle eastern types they're known as. They were always popular at the Famers Market.

I'm sure everybody has a certain favorite one they like. Too many types!

4 years ago I planted my usual 20' X 20' area with hills and the stars aligned!!
I started counting when I started picking (don't know why??) and I got 576 cucumbers from that plot! I was getting 2-5 gal buckets every 2 days!
Here cuc's do best as a spring crop and the plants burn up late May-early June.
I always take extra from the garden up to the Firehouse and that year I was giving them away everywhere.
I put Epsom Salts on the soil before I plant too. (Magnesium Sulfate) I think it makes them sweeter. Everyone raves about how good they are.
