I'm interested in planting food plots for deer, turkey, grizzlies...etc. After the soil's disced and gone over, many references say to use a cultipacker before and after seeding. I assume this is just a heavy metal roller with some ridges? I've never seen one in person. Could I get the same effect by using a six foot wide water filled lawn roller pulled by my drawbar? Or at least close to it? What purpose do the ridges have on the packer? I can get a new big roller for $160 locally. I assume it's heavy when filled with water. I've tried a log, but that didn't cut it.

As always thanks for your help.

This site is addicting isn't it?

Yes, thats basicaly what it is. They can be single or double rows. Mine is a large roller with a smaller one behind it. IF you go to http://www.sweettractors.com/ you'll find pics of different units.
