here are the finished pics:

Inlet. the space between the rock break and the opening of the culvert was lined with readymix to prevent erosion and dirt from getting into the culvert.

Outlet. i've added some readymix on this side too but the pic doesn't show it, it's similar to the inlet. the crossing is topped with 5/8's minus gravel. i'm also getting some 2" minus so i'll probably lay some of that on it as well..

I'm curious how you managed to get a 13ft long culvert? I can only find them in 20 and 24 ft lengths, but sure could use a few in that length for my trails.

Eddie
A neighbor of mine .5 of a mile down the road works for a construction Co.
He gets scrap sections of and 15 and 18 inch single and double wall plastic culvert left over from jobs they do.
Most pieces are about 12 to 14 feet long.
He sells them for 13 dollars a section.
Last summer I bought 2 pieces of 15'' single wall from him at 13 dollars each.
This worked out to about a dollar A foot as one was 13' and the other was 12 feet long.
Last week I bought 2 pieces of 18'' double wall from him for 13 bucks a piece and put in a cross over like Big Baller did.
One joint was 7 feet long and the other one was 6 foot long.
13 feet for 26 dollars came out to 2 dollars per foot.
Can't get any cheaper than his prices.

I wanted to buy a flange but they wanted $200
so i decide to use Eddie Walkers method.
What is a flange? Never heard of that and didn't know you could buy such a thing.
I built the abutments on each end out of free treated lumber.
I used 2 treated 4x4 x8 landscape timbers that I got off the pile of free pallets at lowes & one of the pallets built with treated lumber.
I left 4 ribs of the culvert uncovered on each end of the culvert.
This way I won't have to do much if any dirt removal to add a joint to either end should I decide to widen the crossover later.
My total cost for the project was 26 dollars and that was for the 13 feet of 18'' double wall culvert.

you're lucky to have such a cheap source close to you, it pays to be a good neighbor! i didn't know the proper term, so called it a flange, i later learned that headwall was the correct term - http://www.precastwang.com.au/images/Headwall_large.jpg
Thanks for the picture:
I always called what ever is placed /built at the ends of a culvert abutments.
$400 bucks for 2 of these wouldn't make much sense for a 26 dollar culvert would it?
I like my 2 free treated abutments much much better.

One problem I see with these is getting them off the ends of the culvert to allow adding an extension to the culvert.
Guess you could just slip the new culvert on the old one but who wants to bury 200 bucks in the middle of the crossover then pay another 200 dollars to buy another one of these to put on the other end of the extension where it really goes?
?

this picture was just an example of what i was talking about, i was actually thinking metal which was $200. the concrete headwalls are definately for bigger jobs than i had and probably cost more. i agree that if you ever wanted to extend the crossing you would want to leave it open on the ends with enough room to add another section. where mine is i hadn't planned to extend it but now that i think about it, all i would have to do is remove the rocks and i could, i didn't put down so much concrete that i couldn't get it out with a little work. it might be nice down the road to cover the entire ditch but on the upper side is pretty heavily wooded..
