Cummins diesel oil change interval

That was a poor example on my part.:duh: I guess my point should have been short trips are hard on a diesel and I would not go 15K on the oil.

One of my cars had a water temp gauge and an oil temp gauge. It would get warm water in a few minutes and hot water in 7 miles but the oil was still cold. Cold oil is a cold engine. My diesel car in below freezing weather might start to get warm water in 7 miles at 50-60 mph. Not so sure about my 2004 Cummins as it warms up the water faster than the VW. I doubt the oil is properly "hot" in 7 miles or 15 minutes. A few stop signs along that 7 miles. So even after the oil is hot, it needs to be hot for a while to burn off condensation. I doubt my oil gets hot in the Dodge just pulling itself around. I guess I need to do an oil analysis to see if it is time to change or not. The VW gets changed every 10,000 miles as that is the suggested interval for it.

I used to change my 12v with the P700 mechanical pump, at about 6k with Rotella dino oil. I replaced the stock drain plug with one of those Fumoto valves. The oil can take up to 2 hours to drain out of the mechanical pump so I would pull it into the barn, place the pan under it, open the valve and let it drain overnight. (I used to throw the replacement filter on the drivers seat should I have a brain fart or something)

As for excessive idling, no sleeves in these cylinders, excess idleing can wash the cylinder walls.

I have an 04 Cummins and run Amsoil oil and filter, and change mine once a year, which probably come out to around 10,000 miles. Depending on how you use your truck and what oil you use, I'd go more than 5000 miles but less than the 15,000 miles. I had my oil checked and it came back good at around 5000 miles.
