I cut down a tree today using my sawsall because I dislocated my finger last week and did not want to use the chain saw. What a pain. I later needed to cut it up and since I had the sump grinder on the PT I gave that a shot. It cut through a 4 or 5 inch tree in about 30 seconds. Now the tree had been dead a long time, but it was not rotten. So this can work.

I use it like that also. It's like a chop saw on steroids! You don't get a pretty cut, but it does go right thru it. Biggest I've done is in the 12-14 inch range. I will also use it to take down standing trees, within reason.

How do you use the stump grinder to cut standing trees? Did you fabricate a rotating bracket to change the cutter blade from vert. position to a horz. position?

I hope the wind is blowing in the right direction while the beaver blade is eating the tree:eek:

Pretty close MR!

I drive the pt up to the tree and start side to side in little bites. Blade is just above dirt level so cut happens maybe 6 - 8 inches high. After enough tree material has been ground out the force of the blade just pushes the tree over. All of them have fallen away from the pt but I never do this if I'm not comfortable with the tree falling ON the pt. Obviously I only do this with small trees. I also look at which way the tree is leaning and which side the majority of the crown is on.

I will be the first to admit that I'm just to lazy to go back to the barn to pull out the chain saw.

I'll bet he just gnaws it out like a beaver!
