Cutting a PTO Shaft

I need to cut a pto shaft to length for my generator.
My question is...
What is the minimum amount of overlap needed for safety and reliablility?

Minimum is 6" as I recall, I would leave as much as possible, that way later down the road you could use it with a different tractor.

It would be better if you bought a new one for a few reasons:

1. you will have a shaft attached to the generator at all times.

2. elimination of the wrong time, wrong place, I have it someplace
else on another machine syndrome and its dark and I have no heat.

3. you want at least 50 percent of the internal male portion within
the external tube because of the shaft speed and torque.

Thanks y'all. I knew the folks here would come through.
I have a shaft for each implement except this generator.
The genny is mounted on a home made 3ph bracket.
The setup resulted in an odd length for the drive shaft.
I tried to buy a shaft that was the proper length, but had no joy.
Anyway, thanks again.

the over lap on a pto shaft is about 6 to 12 inches and if you need to be closer to your tractor like you said it is on the 3 point hitch cut it 2 inches shorter then your longs throw of your arms either down or up if it bindes cut it a little shorter, measure from the end of each shaft with it mounted,, down postion ,middle postion and up and see which one will be better,that way the shaft will not fall apart on you when you transport it from place to place it will run best straight off the pto.a little jack shaft will work just make sure you are lined up good and straight on the rear pto shaft with the jenny end.
