Hmm.. did a search on here and the NH owner forum and came up with just 11 threads, total. Most were in reference to the new 8n and not very much at all on the CVT transmission.

So, it's a new, new (read - wait at least a year before buying..??) development in transmissions for compact tractors. All compacts...?

Nothing comparable with JD compacts - that I've ever seen or heard about.

Some discussion comparing the transmission design to Deere's IVT (Infinitely Variable Transmission). I have heard of that transmission in the larger-frame, Deere Ag machines; 6000-7000 series Premium tractors.

Don't know how they work - mechanically - or how they operate in the real world, either; for that matter.

More efficient than HST? Less? Why? How reliable? If they're in the larger, Ag machines they can take a "lickin' and keep on tickin'" ??

More $$$ than HST?

A mechanical CVT will be considerably more efficient that a hydrostatic transmission because much less enengy is converted to heat.

Reliability and durability of CVT transmissions is well established in low HP applications but the jury is still out when applied to machines such as the Boomer 8N (50 HP).

Though the designs may eventually prove both durable and reliable, I certainly will not buy one for several years.

Thanks for the link. I went and checked a number of 'em out - it was real interesting. I could see the potential for longetivity issues (breakdown's) especially with higher hp and torque applications.

The video that detailed the principle behind the "friction transmission" was especially interesting! No metal to metal contact for the transfer of motion (power, torque) between the input (engine) and output (driveshaft). Just a micro thin film of fluid. Almost defied the imagination... how could the components not just heat up and slip and ultimately fail??

Hey AK, just a quick hi!
Hope all is going well with your 110 JD!
By the way, CVT tranny's were used by a Dutch car called a DAF a long time ago in the 1950's.
This company was bought by Volvo later on.

cheers,

Hey George!!! It's been quite a while... I hope all is well with you and your's! :)

Still remember the beautiful barn restoration you did!! Wow.. Sea Biscuit, right?

Everything is going great with the 110. Over 500 hours and less than 2 years. Bought some HyGard lo-vis today at my JD dealer 'cause the front differential is coming due for a change-out @ 600hrs.

I'm really undecided if I should try to sell it this next year (or late Fall) or hang on to it. I want to get out of the cold and snow and the chilly and wet with a cab tractor. I'm impressed with the NH cabs and the dealer in Anch is well respected by the more seasoned farmer's in my area. So, that might be my next tractor..

Or -- I could start lookin' for land in Calif.!! :D

remember the select-o-speed transmisions, crappy things til they got the bugs out of it, but the CVT has been around a long time, a lot of utility vehicles have some form of it.

I have a Continuously Variable Transmission in a Nissan Versa... I love it! (I know it not a tractor...) I worried about it being a "new" tranmission but was told it's common in europe for years (?salesman?). I looked around for more info... Looking in Continuously variable transmission - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
under disadvanteges...

"...CVTs are not as capable of handling torque as other transmission systems..."

Of course, *everything* on the web IS true :rolleyes::eek: My manual does say "DO NOT TOW A TRAILER".

New Holland has just came out with the cvt on their tractors, in the 8n and also in the T7000 series. The basic design from what i have seen on them is that the main drive on these are gear. Then there is a hydraulic motor that sets on the sun gear on the final drive. That hydraulic motor can then turn forward or reverse which can then change the speed a variable amount. Thus then giving you an unlimited about of speed within a specific range. They way they will promote this is like when you run the tractor down the road most tractors will be at full throttle for the fastest speed, a cvt trans can do the same speed at half the rpm. Another major company that runs cvt trans is agco. They actually bought Fendt for that technology.

Isn't that an IVT? or am I confused?
