Newbie sort of question.

Why would I want a Tie Rod Cylinder vs a Cross Tube cylinder?

I am looking at a few on Monday and wanted to get whatever advise I can. Cross Tubes look screwed or welded on, but I can't make sense of the Tie Rod. Those long bolts holding it together?

Tie rod cylinders are cheap and easily rebuilt-That is the ONLY advantage. Those long bolts are indeed holding it together.

Crosstube is the end piece of a cylinder. Here is a page describing different cylinders. You might see something like welded with a crosstube on the ends.

Tie Rod is a type of cylinder.

Sorry, I knew better than to put down cross tube.

I meant to ask what are the benefits of the various cylinder designs (Screw Cap, Welded and I guess they type with 4 rods which is a Tie Rod cylinder?)

Kenny indicated Cost, oddly I don't see tie rods as being significantly cheaper at baileys so I had to ask.

Some cylinders are rated for 2500 psi and others are rated for 4000 psi. It is just a matter of preference. The welded cyl is considered the strongest on the market, and they look neat and trim. That is not to say that an ugly cyl can not do the same job.

You might consider a cyl that is easy to rebuild and you can do it your self, should it need it.

As long as the cyl meets the length stroke, pressure, and end fittings, they can be interchanged. You can even cut off one end and weld on another end to suit your purpose.

There are a lot of good deals to be had in surplus cylinders, and places like Ebay, and Burden Surplus Hydraulics, and others.

Welded cyl will normally cost more than the others.

I think the term "tie rod" refers to the ends of the cylinder (how it attaches to the application) i.e., clevis type connectors... not how it is constructed...

No, the tie rods referred to is the 4 rods holding the cylinder together. You can have a tie rod cyl with any end piece on it.

Thanks for the clarification on my dubious assumption...

I guess I was basing my assumption on picture images from cylinder catalogs...which rarely show a tie rod cylinder without clevis type ends...

This tie rod cyl which is a top link cyl has two different ends on it, a swivel eye and a swivel cross tube.

there are many reasons for different ends on cylinders...

-ball eyes allows side way "wiggling", the way you need on a top cyl for 3p...

-cross tube do not allow any side way "wiggling", but are suitable for pivoting in one or two ends...

-clevis end are used on "non pivoting" cylinders, that do not require lubing/greasing....

-cross tube and ball eye allows lubing/greasing

-retracted lenght can be minimized with crosstube

-crosstube are more heavy duty, rated for more force, usually also comes with brass bearing inside
