Cylinder question?

I have a JD snow plow that I want to put hydralics on. It already has the posts for the cylinders to be mounted on both sides. My question is how do I figure the size and stroke of the cylinders. It has mounts on both sides of the plow pivots so I'm thinking I need two. Or can I just get away with one larger cylinder?

I have a LandPride rear blade. It has mounting on both sides of blade arm. My 3" X 8" cylinder is put on one side. If I need extra angle on other side I move the cylinder to that side.

They've been in production for many years, and from what I can tell they use the same cylinder. 10" closed, 14" open. It's a small stubby cylinder.

When your Plow is in the straight position, measure from center-of-hole to center-of-hole of the Power Angle brackets (the ones on the left as you look at it from the driver's seat.
Is it about 12"?? (Mid position for the power angle).

Then it is the "standard" cylinder found on those plows.

Tell us some Specs of the plow you are referring to and we can help more.

Regardless of what plow you have, all you need to do is measure for what you need. Angle it one way and measure the short side for the retracted (closed) distance and the long side for the extended distance. Then find the closest cylinders within your budget with the right ends for attaching to your plow. I would be looking at 2"-3" diameter cylinders...

Guess i misread your post. Get the model # JD plow you have and look up the parts. I needed parts to mount a JD snow blower on my F735 front mower. JD's price was way out there. Looked on EBAY bought all the mounting hardware for less than $50 with shipping.

The JD model number is not there. I'll try to post a few pics later today. I'm going to angle it and see the retracted distance.

I finally got around to measuring the plow angles. It seems I need a cylinder that is 13-1/2" closed and 21-1/2 open. I looked at Northern tools for a close match in size. Is the closed pin center the total length of the cylinder closed? If so where do I find a cylinder to work in my situation? I'm new to the hydralics game. Is there online source for these? I really need to get something ordered fast as winter is upon us here in the Northeast.

A couple good online sources are Baileynet.com: Main Page, Hercules Sealing Products, and Burden Sales Surplus Center - Hydraulics, Engines, Electrical and More. Any of these sites should have cylinders very close to your needs. They usually come in 2" increments for stroke. 12", 14", 16" etc. Closed pin center is the length closed.

OK, so you need a 8" stroke cylinder. Now we need to know what size the pins are that's on the plow? How about those pictures you promised?

Guys, this one is the closest I could find. Surplus Center Item Detail. Is there a smaller retracted length with an 8" stroke? I'm clueless on this stuff.

This cylinder is kind of on the light side, but it should work okay. The only thing that I would be concerned about is hitting something with the cylinder extended, the rod is only 3/4" and won't take much to bend it. I wouldn't go ramming any snow banks.
