Just found an old brochure I have on the 1700 JCB, so I presume mine will be close.

Dipperstick cylinder is

4 5/16 bore
41 3/4 stroke
2 1/2 rod diamater

even thought they have given you great service, doesn't give them the right to screw you over once. if they'll do it once, they'll do it again.

we have a '70 580 case, and for $600, we could pack every cylinder on the hoe. I'm pretty sure the seals for most of her cylinders cost less then $20 canadian from one of our supply houses.... that shop price, but theres not that much mark-up on it...

i would explain to them, the you've been very happy with thier service, and would like to continue to deal with them, so your going to give them the chance to explain the charges, and make any corrections to the bill, before you take your business elsewhere.

One man for a morning (if that), that's 4 hours labor max. Parts would be less than $50. By my calculations thats $250-$300. However, without an itemized invoice you have no idea what they really did.

It could also be that the rod was bent and had to be straightened. That would add to the cost. No sense in guessing, I would wait till the itemized bill is presented and then decide if what the repair was, warrants the cost. I would never take cylinder work to a dealership, because the people that do the most repairs on cylinders are the independents and they are the ones that usually know how best to start the job and finish it quickly because of this experience.

Our local Kubota dealer subs out all his hydraulic work to a local shop, so I'm sure there is a pretty nice markup for the dealer to touch it. We took our 8 1/2 foot hoe's curl cylinder to this small shop to fix a bent piston, cost $140 for a new rod and new seals (although this is a much smaller cylinder than the one in this post)

Pure speculation, of course, but my guess is that $650 sounds ridiculously high because most of us picture something on the order of the cylinders on our tractors. However, for a cylinder of that size, I'm guessing that price is not really out of line.

I've had bigger cylinders on my now departed Case 580C repacked for less than a sixth of that cost.

I had the extendahoe cylinder rebuilt (including a new rod) for about the same price (about $900 canadian) and I found out I was ripped off because they 'sent it out'. Going directly to a hydraulic shops would have saved me about 20 to 30% on the rebuild.

Something is amiss.

If somebody that you should be able to trust cheats you, its not your fault, its theirs. Both of my bucket curl cylinders on my FEL where leaking and I bought new seals from JD ( about $20 ea. ) intending to do the job myself. When I could not figure out how to get into the cylinder, I took them and the seal sets to a local shop and they did the job for $50/cylinder. It is my opinion that you have been robbed, they just didn't use a gun.

Before everyone jumps to the conclusion that Richard's been cheated, let's give them a chance to explain.

Got somewhat of an update.

The parts guy called back (he was the one that carried my torch to the asst manager)

as best I can tell, the service manager never returned yesterday, HOWEVER, it went up to HIS boss.

His boss told them to credit back $125 to me (a luke warm "yipee' from me)

Seems (or so they say) that when they took it apart, the threads either GOT buggered up, or WERE buggered up. He was unclear. None the less, it took them "longer than they anticipated" and had to fix that issue also (Rods are all straight on Brutus)

So, as it seems, from their perspective they "ate" $125 to make me happy. From MY perspective, I'm not sure I'm still tickled with their rate on this, though not sure if I care to make it an issue. I might just make it my issue the NEXT time I have it done & go elsewhere.

The parts guy said if I'd bought a Komatsu cylinder, they'd run over 2,000, so he was guessing and thought that this one would be $1,500 ballpark.

Obviously I have no idea if he's accurate or not, I just said "oh".

I will call the service manager back shortly and see if he'll give me a detailed breakdown of receipt.
