I have a question for landscaping experts. What is cypress mulch used for? I see it advertised all over. I’ve always just gotten mulch from the recycle center for free. Is cypress mulch better for the trees and shrubs, or just more cosmetic? I’ve seen trees surrounded by a reddish mulch, is that cypress mulch?

The cypress mulch allegedly doesn't float away. In fact it supposedly doesn't float at all.

Sorta makes you wonder why it likes to live near a swamp. I guess it's got suicidal tendancies.

I,m pretty sure that cyprus mulch doesn't decompose as fast as say, pine bark or something else that's not water resistant.
Cedar bark is used as well here in Mi. because it posesses the same characteristics as cyprus. (able to grow in or near water) hope this helps

I had a pro landscaper friend tell me that they use cypress anytime a homeowner wants mulch around the house. He claims is doesn't draw termites like the hardwood mulch. Can anyone verify this ???

I have used a lot of cypress mulch over time. It does not float away or blow away like pine bark or chips. It also seems to last longer. It does not have the fragrant aroma unfortunately of ceder or pine. Pine straw is a favorite where it is available but of course it is prone to flaoting and blowing. The cypress mulch is the only type of mulch that will semi stay put in Kansas due to 40MPH average wind speeds. In Arizona we used a lot of rock and gravel which never blew or floated but might look out of place in some locals. J

Termites will eat most anything that is in the order of non-treated wood be cypress or not. I always inform homeowners to exterminate like their homes depended on it.
