I Just bought a 89 MF 1035. It has the 3 cyl diesel and it starts hard. Cranks over good, seams to have good compresion and a small amount of white smoke out of the exhaust. It starts with a little bit of starter fluid. After that it will start as long as it's within 30 min. Any Suggestions.

If it only starts when engine is at operating temp and has to have starting fluid when cool, im thinking the rings are shot. Just my opinion though.

That's a big conclusion to get to when it really sounds like a fuel issue right now. What else is there that points to bad rings? How many hours on the tractor? Power? Smoke? Low compression?

As i said, its only my opinion. How did i come to such a big conclusion? Having owned 3 diesels with the same symptons of not starting easy but running fine and starting good when warm. Only 1 of the 3 burned oil and another that didnt use any oil had a loss of power and noticeable loss of compression. In frame overhaul kits with new pistons and rings solved all of the starting problems. I hope this is not his problem but again i think its a possibilty and again its just my thoughts on it.

I have no clue to how many hours are on it. It has been used, but dose not look abused.

G'day as it is a little Japanese 3 cyl I would be checking the glow plug/ manifold heater circuit and making sure that is up to par before rebuilding. DO NOT use ether when you use the glow plugs. Does it have an indicator on the dash to tell you if the glow circuit is on??
